Why do you guys think Bert Sugar gave someone who is now on many top 10 lists such a scathing review?

He was often drunk and bitter outside a studio..he like many boxing journalists have to make a good/bad side to boxing. Its his job to live off the past and down play actual talent to keep his articles flowing. The only time this guy actually shocked me is when he stated Tommy Morrison had one of if not the best left hook he seen.....on the other side hes also another EXPERT who picked Spinks to k.o Mike Tyson..etc...etc... Theres never a shortage of these guys even today, most ppll really dont know what they are talking about about boxing...fighters/trainers/journalists..etc...etc....it is what it is.

Though everyone always writes a good/LEGIT article now and then even sugar!

Heres better interview..its in Gallaghers steak house N.Y..a place i went to frequently...too bad missed him here....

Maybe being around long enough to see fighters that were truly special may have something to do with it. Unlike quite a few on this site who equate great size with great skill.

Sugar was a complete hack. There was an interview where he was talking about upcoming fights, and he claimed draining to make weight has nothing to do with durability and ability to take a shot. He said something to the effect of, "What's that got to do with anything. When you move up, do you put the weight in your chin? Bob Fitzsimmons said the bigger you are the harder you fall."

...he was just a story teller who had a very mediocre ability (if you can even call it that) analyzing fights and fighters. Everything always went back to how Stanley Ketchel was the greatest athlete to ever walk the planet. Or how Gunboat Smith had a pet dog named Charlie. I met him a couple times, both around 10-11 in the morning, and he was drunk with an unlit cigar in his hands, and grumpy to boot.

RIP Bert, if an old timer won a fight without using his right hand in 2 rounds as Wlad did in a title fight ( not 3 as you said ) it's part of his legacy and something you would say ad nausea.

Sugar is sometimes right, but he's more of a story teller. The type grandpa used to tell you as a young boy. Based on truth, but with some colorful liberties to entertain the children.

Told the complete truth. How many of Wlads bouts stunk up the joint? Too many to count. He relied too much on a style void of great talent. Plus he was terribly fragile which is the primary reason his style evolved into what was seen during most of his bouts.

    Very few, actually.

"The joint" almost always cheered him to the rafters unless he was fighting in America. In Germany, tens of thousands turned out to watch him in stadiums and millions and millions watched him on television.

Overwhelmingly, they were satisfied customers and came back over and over again.

The complete truth is that Bert repeated tired old and mostly discredited yarns that even a neophyte student of the game would find totally devoid of interest or illumination.

So, in that regard, he was like so many posters here.
