Why did Bert Sugar give Klitschko a scathing review?

He probably didn’t find Wlad's style aesthetically pleasing.

Either way this is a prime example of how a contemporary testimony can give a misleading impression.

This was an old interview that took place immediately after the Sulton Ivragimov fight which was over nine years ago. Most boxing fans had a low opinion of Wladimir as the Sanders and Brewster defeats were still fresh in the memory. Since that time he's put together a lengthy string of wins including some decent challengers. I doubt Sugars opinion has changed but nevertheless.. Bert once said he only ranked Larry Holmes #10 all time with Holmes sitting next to him.

Nor did I. I couldn't stand that grab and jab protocol he constantly used. To his credit he did a lot less of that against Joshua but one evening doesn't make up for a decade of it. Still, I can't argue that he wasn't effective.

....they were used to watching Sven Ottke, so had very low standards to start with! ;)

No. I think we were all where Bert Sugar was at that point.

Does it say more about Klitschko?
Or does it say more about us?

Funny, the most insiteful thing I ever read from Bert was about Nat Fleisher's book Training for Boxers, Nat kept saying boxers needed to take sponge baths daily, Bert wondered if they didn't have wash cloths in the day. That was about it.

Well that was your last steak bc its closed...probably bc of me and my drink tab on the arm through out the years....lol

On Wlads style? i did, i liked how he controlled the fight and picked his shots,he wasnt boring the guy had a 90% k.o percentage at one time and a high k.o rate...he hit guys with punishing shots, the truth is up until joshua he really was that imposing. People complain about technique or lack of,these guys really arent watching every move from foot work/position to nutralizing the opposition.

Hes a bigger Joe louis in a way if you see how he sets up( better defense) ,hes just 240 plus pounds who can actually fight unlike big old time HW's who didnt utilize their size.

hes right, the Ks are two of the weakest h2h champs in history of the hw division, though that doesnt mean they are bad - to win a title you need some decent boxing ability even in these watered down multititle times. They are converted fighters, not naturals, brought in because their faces fit to make money out of a new market in the east euro countries now with money to burn.

Its obvious, whenever have two brothers been able to own the titles if it wasnt to some major degree manufactured for them to do so. When a 38 year old failure is thee greatest threat, thats when. think about that, a 38 year old failure wouldnt ever get a shot in previous eras, but in k bro era hes the equivalent of Batmans Bane. wtf.

He spoke the truth. Wlads reign took what was once the richest prize in sports and gave it the same value as a happy meal.

He never produced a good fight other than in the ones he took a loss. His triumphs came in defeat every time.

Few of us here did, and Sugar obviously didn't.
