discuss? lennox lewis when he fought razor ruddock was 27 yrs of age and 21 pro fights going into the ruddock fight v anthony joshua 27 yrs of age and 18 pro fights going into the wlad fight ............so who wins and why 27 yr old lennox v 27 yr old joshua ?????
Lewis was more of a killer then but was risky and left himself open to be hit. If he hurt AJ he would finish the fight but I could see a AJ hurting that Lewis first.
AJ wins. People remember Lewis' great win over Ruddock but often forget that the same Lewis looked not so good in the other fights at that time - Tucker, Bruno, Jackson and McCall 1. Lewis had more flaws than AJ at the age of 27. In that sense I would say that AJ is closer to his technical peak than Lennox was at 27. AJ has better balanse, and better overall offensive skills than that version of Lennox. Also he doesn't leave himself open as much as Lennox did at 27-29. Of all Lennox's opponents in that timeframe Frank Bruno is the closest to AJ in terms of style. BUT. AJ is far better than Bruno - he's taller with better speed, better chin, more confident. Bruno caused Lennox some problems and many people think that he outboxed Lennox in rounds 1-6. 27 y.o. AJ will do better than that, he will stop 27 y.o. Lewis.
60-40 in favour of Lewis. A bit more fluid than Joshua, though also not without his flaws.Would not go six rounds either way. Late 90s Lewis beats current Joshua all day long, but to be fair, Joshua hasn't hit his peak yet whilst that Lewis definitely had.
Ruddock had switched trainers, his trainer was actually Floyd Patterson and he looked better in his previous fight bc his opponent Jackson didnt throw any punches ( exactly what Ruddock did vs Lewis) Lewis vs Bruno showed what could actually happen in this match up...which i broke down in the British boxing section Joshua vs Bruno. Lewis had trouble with fast starters,he struggled with guys who brought the fight to him who could reach him. Under steward he tightened up some defense flaws where he wasnt skilled enough to throw aggressive in long spurts.Lewis did not defend against jabs well before Steward ,Joshua could throw a jab at him and get in on Lewis or simply hit him with those fast combos..leading rights/hooks etc....Lewis did this to an extent but was not as fast and didnt put punches together like Joshua is now. Joshua is a constant pressure fighter,a few fights show Lewis was rocked with long fighters, even Grant knocked him back into the ropes 30 seconds in( if Joshua had him hurt or stunned early its almost a sure win). If Joshua could defeat Wlad who was well prepared he could defeat Lewis and have an easier time bc one thing wlad always did well is control the jab and not be so easy to land a clean shot on from the outside. Wlad at 41 is still more savvy than Lewis was at 21 fights by far. I rank Joshua over Lewis, there's just too many fights and x factors that favors Joshua even now to look at,you have to look at weaknesses just just strenths.I think Lewis late 90's would hang with Joshua ,but i think with the power/speed and style combined even Manny Steward is going to have a hard time solving that puzzle with the cautious Lewis against a better inside fighter, better set up puncher and more accurate puncher. Manny steward taught Lewis to impose size first then skill...would this work and would this tactic work against Joshua without Steward bc i think he would have to do this and at 227 pounds not 250 like he was against Vitali? Joshua 19 fights vs Lewis 21 fights....Joshua K.O rnd 5 would be my guess.Basing it off a tough 7 round with Bruno and first round with Briggs, and at a heavier weight/tougher 6 round war with Vitali....and the current Wlad fight..where he almost got a 5th round k.o .
