I always enjoy the chant and song of the UK fans, there were no better fan moments than listening to them singing "Hatton Wonderland" when Hatton fought. A million times more entertaining than American fans (btw, I am American). There is also just something more electric about the atmosphere and the ring walks leading up to the fight as well. Can't put my finger on it, but just more electric and exciting.
No, bad commentating and there are just a few interesting fights when big fight cards happen. They protect their fighters too much.
The British commentators are epic when their home fighter gets knocked out. "Oh my oh my oh my" or "Massive right hand, he's hurt.. can he recover from this?? What tragedy!!!"
I do prefer US commentary. But yes UK fights tend to have a better atmosphere. Probably because we drink more and so get more vocal, hence the long history of chanting at sporting events.
I'm from the UK... never been to a fight in the US but Eddie Hearn has talked about this in a few interviews previously and thought he summed it up well. I think it was when he was talking after DeGale had been fighting out there... he basically said in the UK fights are an event which people get into, its like a night out, people get dressed up, drink and then will go out afterwards and us brits love a good night out. Hearn said when he was in the states the atmosphere was just more subdued... they were there to watch the boxing he said hardly anyone was drinking... I think he mentioned seeing some guy sat there in shorts eating a plate of food while watching. I dont know if most of the people that go to the boxing here are there for the actual boxing or there to have a good night out with the chanting etc just gets you up for the craic
I watched highlights of the Joshua/Klitshcko fight from showtime i think it was... the commentary was hilarious... "Joshua went through Klitshko like tap water through a tourist"... "Kitshcko smoked him like a monti crisco" or something like that... brilliant!
The Brits are funny folk, they get swept up in the event and hype their guys to the high heavens, and, I believe, sometimes push their home fighters to better performances than they would have been able of normally. I mean it must have been a booster for AJ, for example, with the roaring crowd behind him, as opposed to fighting in some arena in Nowheresville. That adds up to a terrific atmosphere, and the atmosphere is definitely part of the event. I have a theory that this is some sort of tribal celtic trait
British fans are great at getting behind their own! Seem to always create a good atmosphere and support the fighters. Brook Spence is my first live pro fight so I'm looking forward to the atmosphere there. 24k tickets sold and probably 99% will be screaming "All of the lights!!" when Brook comes out
I don't mind who the commentators are or where they're from, but I find the US commentators offer more boxing knowledge.
The chanting emanates from soccer and rugby, and the chanting from the 90,000 at Joshua-Klitschko sounded brilliant.
Yea. Like the previous poster said, the chanting comes from football and rugby. Here in Canada, I've been to american football games, nhl games, and boxing cards. The atmosphere was nothing alike the atmosphere that I witnessed when I went to London UK and I had the chance to watch a football match. It was electric. And yea, 90% of the adults we're drinking and having a good time all around. And they dont just drink one beer and thats it like most folks in Canada do.
