How did we get here? Perfectly valid question to ask. With a combined age of 89, you would imagine neither Big O nor The Cannon were likely candidates to be participating in a legitimate world championship tilt for even a fractured slice of the ABC pie in even today's dismal heavyweight division. Yet here we are; this is a real thing actually happening in a few weeks.

Here's why: Lucas Browne came from behind on the cards to defeat a spent Ruslan Chagaev in March of last year. He was then stripped for testing positive for a banned substance and the World Boxing Association decided to award Chagaev the belt, vying for which he now holds a 5-2 (1) career mark, despite having not officially reclaimed it between the ropes. He declined to pay sanctioning fees to his effective alma mater org, however, so vacant it became once more. Now we have Briggs (somehow ranked #3 by the WBA having fought nobody of significance in the seven years since his loss to Vitali Klitschko, despite racking up a 9-0 record with eight kayos and seven in the first round in that span) and Oquendo (somehow ranked fourth, despite having not fought period in the last three years since he lost to Chagaev in the latter's final successful WBA title defense) squaring off for a quarter of the heavyweight boxing regency. No television outlets in the US have opted to pick this historic event up, curiously. Sky in the UK, however, will have full coverage.

Now that's the fight for the REAL HW championship of the world.

Two young, prime HWs will face each other to answer the question - who is the baddest man in the world right now.

The winner should take on WBF Toney for all the potatoes!

Then we'd have one unified champ finally.

Then the winner can take out Deonkey for the lesser known WBC belt

Now way this fight gets to the final bell. They'll both gas out before the end of 7.
So I got The Cannon by KO.
    He will be more motivated

The WBA are being a little ambitious scheduling this as a 12 rounder...

If there isn't a ko by the 4th round then both will retire on their stool....

52 years ago the WBA stripped Ali for fighting a return match with Sonny Liston, then made the Terrell vs Machen fight winner the NEW Hvyweight champ.

You're leaving out a few pieces:
    1. Shannon Briggs beat Zumbano Love for the vacant WBA-NABA title, earning his WBA ranking. Zumbano was qualified to fight for this because he previously held the WBA Fedelatin heavyweight title and less notably won the South American and Brazilian heavyweight titles. Briggs was one of the most noteworthy heavyweights to have held the WBA-NABA title prior to this contest, so he was qualified to fight for it once again. He then maintained his good standing with the WBA by knocking out some stiff in Panama City, where they are headquartered.
    2. Oquendo had earned his shot at the Chagaev by winning the WBA Fedelatin title, qualifying him to next win the WBA-NABA title, which gave him the WBA ranking and "real" title shot. There was an officiating disparity against Chagaev, I think the last round ended early, thus leading to a lawsuit and mandated title shot for Oquendo. After an injury and a lot of politics, he now is being given the shot.
