I've said it before and I'll say it again. Big George was the best heavyweight ring cutter ever to live. His footwork is the most perpetually underrated asset of any ATG heavyweight.

 

Who was his opponent?

 

I think it was the mexican hw champion. I remember comeback George just toying with him. Poor dude had zero chance.

 

Definitely true. That was something that's over looked by a lot of people. They see foreman as this wrecking ball monster who just plodded along after opponents. But he was effective in cutting you off before he struck. Ali remarked on this as one of the reasons he went to the ropeadope. He couldn't just up and dance from George because of the way foreman cut down the ring. To be in there with a peak foreman... Not my idea of fun.

 

If Sonny Liston had learned to do that, the first Ali fight might have gotten very interesting! And Eddie Machen would have been stopped inside 6 rounds.

I remember Ali pointed out years later, that every time Foreman took a step Ali had to take 2 to keep distance/range.

 

I can remember ali saying that Birmingham and that he totally underestimated foreman. He had to adapt to survive.

Isn't it unreal, 9-10's of the world expects an ali funeral yet here he is beating Foreman in very impressive fashion then saying he underestimated him. Ali is the man.
