The narrative for Golovkin has been that he became the de facto kingpin at 160 because the lineal champions (Canelo as well as Cotto and Martinez) had little inclination to fight him. If it turns out that Canelo beats him and is actually a better fighter at 160, it does put a different perspective on the last few years. Sometimes single fights mean more historically than they probably should, considering that a lot can happen on the night.

Trying to draw a historical comparison, Floyd Patterson was accused of avoiding Eddie Machen while he was champ. He later beat Machen after he had lost the title, and Machen doesn't really get much "credit" for being ducked by Patterson. Patterson also ducked Sonny Liston for a while, and then obviously was crushed when they did fight. Liston is often given credit for being the uncrowned champion dating back to when Patterson "should" have fought him, and the assumption is that he would have beaten Patterson earlier on and had a much longer reign.

In a strange way, Govokin and Canelo are fighting for not just who is the champion now, but also who history will show should be considered the champ for the last couple of years. It could have a lasting impact on their legacies one way or the other.

Canelo will be in the HoF for sure, win or lose, and I bet Golovkin makes it there too as well.

You don't stay in the top 5-10 p4p for that long without getting into the HoF, the standards are way short of ATGness.

Who are the clowns who voted ATG???

So beating geale, brook (a welterweight who had only one good win in his division), lemiuex, a close fight with jacobs and then losing to canelo makes you an ATG???

There are current active fighters with better resumes than golovkin who i dont consider ATGs (tim bradley, joshua, canelo himself has a better resume).

What standard are we using to measure his greatness? Talent? Stats? Because any idiot can have great "talent". Adrien broner and nicholas walters are "talented". Victor freaking ortiz is "talented". Wilder has good "stats", so does fury. Are they ATGs?

He certainly cant be ATG because of his opponents. That resume is pretty thin! If he beats canelo decisively and goes on to unify with saunders/beat bernards record then obviously thats up for discussion. Until then, this is a joke of a conversation.

Nonitio Donaire spent years in the hop half of the P4P list and he ain't no hall of famer.

Don't be surprised if Donaire makes the Hall of Fame, if you look at the boxing forums more people think he's a HoF fighter than not. Like I keep saying, HoF <<<<<< ATG.

Just FWIW, I believe Donaire made the top half of the Ring p4p list in February 2011 and lost it after losing to Rigo April 2013. So just over two years. Golovkin cracked the top 5 p4p May 2015, and will keep it at least until September 2017. So a similar amount of time.

When nonito retires after 5 years. I think his name will be in first ballot HOF.
If GGG somehow lose a close decision, which is very possible, I also think he will be voted in. A win and unification with Saunders will etch his name as one of the greats middleweight.
A Canelo win will ensure his entrance, a loss I'm not sure but he is young and certainly can accomplished more.
