Brutal puncher. Certainly one of boxing hardest punchers ever. No one questions Joe Louis punching power. The only man who fought both Dempsey and Louis stated Dempsey punched harder than Louis. He further stated....." When Dempsey hit you in your shoulder he broke your shoulder. When he hit you to the body it felt like his fist came out your back. When he hit you on your hip he dislocated your hip." Fleischer who watched both Dempsey and Louis live from ringside also felt Dempsey hit harder.

It is really hard to make this comparison because outside of Fulton and Willard he wasn't in an era of superheavies and Firpo is average to small today.

I think the Mormeck fight would be closer to the result.

Willard had gone ten listless rounds in 4 years, was 37 years old and... just wasn't that good to begin with. Calling his defense porous would be very flattering. Anyone with his guard and his glacial reflexes would be a sitting duck for a honed pro of Dempsey's abilities.

How well does Kovalev's power stack up at heavyweight? What about Beterbiev? What about Kudryashov? Or Gassiev?

On par with the best today. Dempsey could hit. The thing is the lighter gloves increased his power a bit, and the no corner rule for knockdowns really allowed Dempsey to jump on his injured opponents.

So his power would be a tad less today ( unless you argue modern supplements ) and his floored opponents would have more time to recover.

    To Dempsey fans.

Honestly ask yourself how hard Artur Beterbiev punches at heavyweight. That'll put this ridiculous question into some kind of meaningful perspective.

I don't know much about those fighters.

How do you rate Tyson Fury's power ?

Dempsey had over 100 fights starting from age 15 or 16. He fought under the name Kid Blackie and they were all fought in mining towns of the west. They weren't anything notable but it should be noted that he didn't start professionally at 19.
