How about Jimmy Wilde's power against today's Welterweights...less weight difference.

What about a 5lb baby versus thin air. Even less weight difference.

You'll never make any headway with these guys on this topic. These types believe that while a 5-lb weight gap is huge for even the best 122-lb fighters, and a 15-lb weight gap insurmountable for the best 160-lb men, a 50-lb weight gap is all but completely immaterial for a 185-lb man.

    I think it's more about punching ability/power.
I don't think everyone is saying a 190 pound man can cope just as easily with a division full of 240-260 pound fighters. That's a different subject entirely.

The point it, there's a point at which a devastating puncher has enough power to really devastate just about any man , and there's probably another point where increased size and weight generally won't produce increase in punching power.

Was Nicolay Valuev the biggest puncher of recent years ? The biggest puncher in history ?
He was a top 10 fighter in his day, and weighed 320 pounds, so if body weight is so important it's hard to explain how he wouldn't hit harder than all the others, right ?

Proportionately, and maybe actually, it's far more weight difference anyway.
Wilde was maybe 100 pounds. Modern welterweights are maybe 160+ in reality.
    That's 60% heavier.
Dempsey was 190 pounds. 60% heavier would be 300 pounds.

Jimmy Wilde was a devastating puncher though, no doubt.

    I think you'd be surprised...

Probably, I don't doubt that additional weight has diminishing returns past a certain point, given changes in body mechanics and coordination that sometimes accompany it. But how exactly would we know? In any event, that point is likely significantly higher than 190-lbs.

Yeah, I agree. But if we're discussing a topic and the starting point is a specific boxer, ie. Jack Dempsey ..... I would have thought it obvious that we're considering a 190 pound fighter with exceptional, freakish punching ability/power for his weight.
I mean, I just don't see what's preventing anyone from accepting that as the basis here.

The way I see it, someone so exceptional at 190 would still being carrying power that would be considered "very good" for someone at 210 - 220, and still probably "pretty good" or "above average" in the higher brackets, say 230+.

He was 108 with 99 KOs. No way Terrance Crawford could deal with him!

    Yeah.

I just asked on another thread because I am interested; If you put 6-4 208 lb. Jack Lambert in a time machine in 1974, and put him in at Middle Linebacker for the Steelers today, would he be an All-Pro?

You see, I think the O. Coordinator would see this stringbean in the middle of the defense, call 3 fullback dives in a row, and Lambert would be carried off the field looking out of his earhole.

You could be right but not if they catch him first! There`s no way Dempsey could take a blow from heavyweights that size with their kind of power! Another problem is they would be likely to catch him first because of their reach and their ability to box around that reach. A tall order for the excellent Dempsey.
