He was either an astonishing specimen or a poster boy for every modern advance in training.

    Jack Dempsey makes those guidelines.

What do you say about that?

I have absolutely nothing to say about that, other than "so what?" or "who cares?"

What if the weight achieved in one era is more functional than weight achieved in another era? It means the usual argument of ruling out smaller fighters is not possible in a level playing field.

You don't care because you have no argument. You have most likely spent a life time rating an unproven man on what he looks like beating up on a lower level of fighter. And putting the notion that he beats any great fighter who happens not to have enhanced himself the modern way to look as muscled.

Ramos and Frazier weighed about the same.

I don't mean to insult anyone here, but guys always have rose colored glasses about their favored era. I just have one question; do you guys think that Jack Lambert at 208 lbs. would be playing Middle Linebacker for the Steelers today? I wonder that every time I see one of these "Marciano vs. Anthony Joshua" threads.

Does he look significantly more impressive than this photo of Jim Jeffries taken over a 100 years ago?

I bet tiny Barry Sander would still smoke today's linebackers.

One poster here claimed that Jim Brown's Browns would be a dominant team in today's NFL.

Yeah that 236 lb. per man offensive line would BRING HEAT!

Functional weight is a term describing excess weight that can be used as an asset. It is not always an asset. but today methods allow that weight can be more successfully gained without encumbrance to the fighter.
