Wanted to have a thread where I post random, if not entirely threadworthy on their own, boxing thoughts.... if you have any youd like to share, or comment/pick apart mine, feel free Again, just using this to post things I dont really feel are worthy of their very own threads but just feel like posting on - My pick for the Kova Ward 1 fight was Kova SD I think.... I texted a friend before the fight saying 'Controversial decision with one knockdown' as I figured it would be close enough to where, whoever won, there would be some vocal challenging by the fans, but figured Kova would knock him down early. I felt Ward took control towards the end of the fight, and right after the fight up until a few weeks ago I felt Ward would win more comfortably. My official prediction in the prediction league is gonna be Ward SD probably, but for no reason at all I have started thinking Kova is going to win this. Not sure why exactly but starting to feel Kova is going to end Ward around the 8th round, give or take a round.... I know thats a bad pick and Ive favored ward this entire time so its weird that Im feeling this so strongly. Starting to look forward more to this fight. Will either be the gem on wards crown and career, or Kovalev will have 'vengeance' Will there be a third fight if Kova wins? - Keep going back and forth on the Golovkin Canelo scrap.... in terms of betting. Official prediction is going to be G by KO in 11. But, I can def see Canelo winning this, and in vegas you can double your money, on him. Obviously if I could see Canelo legitimately beating Golovkin, I can definitely see a situation where its a close fight that maybe Golovkin 'should' win if scored legit, but they give it to Canelo (I know many people who felt Canelo should have L's to Lara, Trout, and/or Cotto, although personally I feel he won all three) So idk... a bet on Canelo is pretty tempting for me. Even though I do think G should take this still.
Here's my random scatterbrained ramble. I've been feeling the same way about Kovalev-Ward 2 for a few months now, thinking Ward will edge it close, fairly or unfairly, but like you, I've switched back over to Kovalev, I sense a legit cockiness in Ward where I think he and Virgil have actually convinced themselves they won the first match and they're going to go in thinking, "Oh we figured out Sergey from the 7th to 12th, we got this", not remembering the match correctly, that 7-9 were close and that 10-12 were coin flips, and that was against a clearly gassed Kovalev. Kovalev performs well under pressure, so Ward trying to play mind games with Kovalev will backfire on him, big time, when Kovalev is angry, that's when he does his most savage work, he becomes a heat seeking missle, Ward has gone about this whole build the wrong way. He's awoken a beast in Kovalev, and Kovalev is being so quiet because he's confident of his gameplan, and isn't letting anything they say ruffle his feathers. Also, look at the Boone and Pascal rematches, Kovalev is very capable of making the proper adjustments and sticking to that game plan, he brutalized them both the second time around, the same fate awaits Ward.
I like this thread - thanks ...random thoughts. In my experience in boxing at the 8 count you're asked three things...walk forward, put your hands up and do you know where you're. I could be wrong but when Wlad dropped AJ he didn't do that. He couldn't or didn't get his hands up to the ref. I understand there would have probably been a riot if the ref called it off but I wouldn't have blamed the ref calling it a tko for Wlad at that point. Was I the only one thinking this in the fight? Also...do people really believe GGG walks around at 180? I watch the HBO stuff and Abel interviews and they always say he walks around at 165 - am I naive? Also (lol)...am I the only one that thinks this McGregor v May Jr will never happen. I feel it's PR to keep them relevant. Also...why have none of the major promoters asked facebook/YouTube to stage their fights rather than ppv...I'm sure they'd put up big $$ and get double the audience. My random boxing thoughts
My thoughts about the Golovkin vs Alvarez fight is not who will win (I'm almost certain about that part), but the weird part of marketing the fight. When it was scheduled to happen, most people were certain how this would end, and with Canelo being 6 to 1 on, the bookies reflected that clearly. Now, it happens much later with Canelo maturing more, and Golovkin too but in a less positive way, and suddenly the odds have tightened to Alvarez having a good chance on pulling the upset. Or actually that close that you can't even call it an upset anymore. It will also surely generate much more money if it would have a year ago. So, I hate to say it, but it looks like DLH made the right call on this one, which probably leads to more of that in the future.
thats a gut feeling you have about the ward-kov fight. thats just your subconscious processing information you arent yet consciously aware you picked up. its now telling you your initial pick doesnt jive with all the data. split your bet between a golovkin ko and a canelo decision win. you wont make as much money, but you stand less chance of losing any.
Monetary wise yes for the "golden boy" for the fans - it should have happened when Canelo beat Cotto. But I am appreciative it's happening. GGG is my favourite fighter to watch but I see significant improvements in Canelo. I'm picking GGG with bias but I think it's going to be a hard night for both of then
Hmmm... interesting on the AJ note, Id have to rewatch the fight, Im not usually a fan of stoppages where a fighter can genuinely continue (for exactly the reason we saw in that fight. Had the ref called it off, he would have stopped who would have naturally won eventually, just in my opinion) but one thing for sure, you are totally right there would have been a riot But good point there Ill have to rewatch that actually. No way in hell I believe G walks around 165 lol... Abel talks a lot of crap, in my opinion I do feel it will happen.... so much money on the table. Usually when theres that much money to be made, its hard to keep something from happening. Everyone involved, White, Mcgregor, Mayweather, CBS, Haymon, SHO, ect, all want it to happen, the only entity that wouldnt want it happening is the UFC, because its never a good look to have your name guy get schooled, regardless of the reasonable excuses he will have after the fight. But I heard (whatever thats worth lol... probably not much) that they are getting a big cut of McG's purse, and his purse will be huge. So at the end of the day they will be making good money too. So its just hard for me to not see this happening. Hope it doesnt though.... wont be a good look for boxing I dont think. Good question on youtube.... would be interesting to know why that hasnt been really tackled head on.
Thanks for taking the time to read . -I'd love your opinion watching he AJ Wlad fight again - GGG weight - sitting in a cafe (should be doing work lol)...the more I think - the more I agree with your point. -May/Conor - all great points but it's getting old. Why hasn't it been done though...I'm sticking with it won't be. I hope I'm right ...even though I'll still go to the local hoping Floyd loses (I can dream even tho it won't happen). YouTube/facebook...Arum is probably the most successful promoter in America and is 85? He probably doesn't understand that people watch most fights that way. Regardless if there's a new mike Tyson - ppv is dying. It's time to adapt
I differ on the Kov-Ward fight. I think Ward makes better adjustments as he showed in the first fight after being knocked down. For the record, I thought Kov won that fight. I noticed Kov sputtered in the second half. Kov spent most of his energy in the first half. Ward and Virgil will adjust their plan from the first fight. The game plan will be to minimize early rounds for Kov then put pressure on Kov in the 2nd half. Ward executes a fight plan (no matter how boring it may be). He sticks to it. He listens to Virgil. Close fight again with Ward besting Kov. Canelo vs GGG. You got to give Canelo credit for taking on everybody. Canelo is the best opponent GGG has faced. Canelo has more than enough talent to upset GGG. Would I put money on Canelo? I'm not that sure. Strangely, I don't think Canelo is in his prime yet. I'm going with GGG by close decision. He'll knock down Canelo at least once and he'll need it for a slim victory.
My 2 cents: I thought Wlad penned a very classy article about how a loss is actually a win the other day and I agree wholeheartedly with him. I think he should retire on that note rather than taking a rematch with Joshua which I'm 80% sure will end with him on his back, that I would really hate to see. Loma will school Salido so bad this time around that I think his corner will have no choice but to throw in the towel. When Canelo GGG was signed, I thought hey this is a 50-50 match. But the more I think about it, I don't see it happen. I think GGG will win a clear decision or possibly stop him. Can anybody name a lower rank p4p fighter beat the higher one but also coming from a weight class below? Maybe rigo-donaire? Somebody correct me cause I can't think of many or any at all.
Well we'd have to go back...way back! Chavez Taylor and Robinson lamotta . In this era...I'd have to google but nothing springs to mind
Hold on.. Chavez and Robinson might be smaller but when they meet Taylor and lamotta, I think both are p4p better fighter. Where Canelo not only a weight class smaller but also a few point lower in p4p rank.
I've been thinking a lot about the WLAD and AJ fight. I had never been so nervous about a fight as I was this one. I went into it not being able to split the two. Imo a true 50/50 fight. Even though I'm a AJ I wasn't like most AJ fans thinking it would be over in 3 rounds. I was talking to people and they thought WLAD was over the hill but I kept saying he wasn't so I was more anxious than most. When the fight started I couldn't take my eyes of the fight as I was awaiting the fireworks. As the fight progressed my nerves started coming down and when AJ knocked WLAD down it was soo happy and i thought AJ has won it. When WLAD got up I was thinking why can't you stay down and lose. When unnoticed AJ gassed I thought oh no and I genuinely thought AJ had made the biggest mistake of his career going gung ho to KO WLAD and gassing himself as a result. When AJ got knocked down I was speechless and gob smacked, I thought AJ had lost that's how badly hurt AJ was. When AJ got up I was surprised, WLAD had just connected with a clean right which would have knocked out anyone else. At that moment I thought wow AJ has a lot of heart. I thought that WLAD would have put the pressure on AJ and ko'ed him, but instead WLAD kept has distance and allowed AJ to recover. In round11 I was thinking it was gunna go the distance and AJ would win a close decision and then that uppercut struck and I thought what a uppercut and when AJ knocked down WLAD 2 times I thought how is WLAD getting up, what heart he has. When AJ finally ended the fight I started celebrating and being overjoyed. Then I thought what a fight I've witnessed between 2 great fighters and it would be remembered for a long time. I remember thinking that WLAD has earned all my respect and should go out on that performance.
