I suppose this fight signified the end of that heavyweight era. Shame that fight didn't happen a few years earlier.
Definitely would have been closer than what happened when they actually fought. But Lewis was pretty much as good as he was in 2002 imo, and whilst Tyson was clearly better then than in 02, I see him eventually folding around the 10th round or so, with Lewis surviving a couple of scares early on.
It's too bad Tyson was past it in that fight. An early 90's version would have made that fight a lot more competitive
Same exact result. At the time Lewis was with Stewart for 2-3 years and learned how to hold & lean. No chance for Mike.
I remember fight night very well.. Was around 11-12 years old and 30+ people (many of whom I didn't know( were hovered around the shitty CRT tv that we had in the living room. Tyson was shot but almost everyone thought he had a chance because he was Tyson, although the more educated fans there strongly favored Lewis. I DKSAB back then and was rooting for Tyson without any real knowledge of the fight. That was when fight parties were still common.
I don't believe any version of Tyson post-1991 had any chance with Lennox whatsoever. What Holyfield did to him after Tyson's assortments of "opponents" proved he wasn't ready for a live guy. The Tyson that fought Ruddock would've given Lennox hell, not saying he would win, but it would've been extremely competitive.
I was a massive Tyson fan growing up, Tyson v Bruno was the first fight I ever saw in 89 at the age of 6. I was in the prime Tyson destroys everyone in history from then on group. Roll on 2002 I'd just got out of jail in time for the fight still hoping Tyson would do it but deep down knew Lewis was too big and overall too good. Tbh I don't think Tyson at his very best beats the best of Lewis.
Agreed but Steward always knew in that fight - even with Mike way past his best - that Mike still had power. Respect to Lewis in this fight. Also respect for Tyson for not cashing in on a rematch - would have been a worse beating
Mike Tyson won the first round, but that's all he had was one round in him at that point. Prime Mike Tyson could go a strong 12 rounds with that type of effort. In that matchup I'd see prime Mike keeping Lewis on the defensive the whole fight, winning by KO in the mid to late rounds. That older Mike Tyson was really a shell of himself. To beat Lewis you need lots of energy to pressure him.
both in their prime would be a pretty tight race. in a 10 fight derby, i favor tyson, in a 3 fight one i favor lewis.
Yes Lewis would be too much for -any- version of Tyson Very coincidental how Tyson was suddenly -past his best- exactly at the same time he finally started facing strong opposition, like Holyfield and Lewis funny how that works
