Both have been guided pretty well. GGG was by far and away the more finished product coming out of the amateurs and has a considerably higher ceiling as a pro. But Wilder's developed into a Top 5 heavyweight who headlines cards on nationally televised fights; and who will likely be in a position to cash out in a big money fight before too long.

Given what they had to work with, both fighters have been promoted properly, I think.

 

GGG's resume is far superior to Wilder's. Far. K2 has obviously promoted GGG better.

 

He has not headlined a PPV over 200k buys. With his knockouts and personality he should be doing easily half a million PPVs. However, I do feel the real reason for the weakness of Golovkin's star power is HBO's terrible marketing, rather than Tom's promoting.

Still, if Golovkin were with the likes of Golden Boy he'd be a much bigger star.

 

Loefler is the most underrated promoter in the game. He does well with all his clients particularly considering he is marketing them to an audience largely composed of partisan bigots.who begrudge them success.

Wilder is a home grown natural who looks the part and some may dispute acts the part and he is still disliked more than fighters who are still considered the enemy.

 

(qualifier: i have zero knowlege of what goes in negotiations between rival promoters, beyond what gets reported in the boxing media)

do you think Tom Loefler gets taken advantage of (and therefore causes the fighters he promotes to be likewise disadvantaged)?

reason i ask: for one thing, he seems a little naive. I recall that during the contract negotiationsn for the Jacobs fight (which began shortly after GGG vs Brook); there were several significant periods of time during which there appeared to be no progress, during most of those, i recall Loefler sending tweets like "we're almost there" or something to that effect

two, he just seems like a decent guy which suggests he might lacks any real understanding of the depts to which at least a few other promoters would sink to secure various advantages for the fighter they promote.

three, he seems to give away a lot (at least for GGG's fights) to the other side--money, preferential treatment regarding drug testing, no clauses in the Jacob contract to keep post weigh-in rehydration even-handed (granted he had know way to know that Jacobs would opt out of the IBF morning weigh-in, but he did know that GGG would have to do it else risk having his IBF belt stripped, so why not contractually bind Jacobs likewise

of course the counter-argument to three above is that GGG's bargaining position is always weak--the other side knows GGG wants to fight and wants to fight often, so for instance, Jacobs could just walk away from the negotiations at any time he feels he's not getting what he wants, and a Jacobs threat to just sit on the sideline without fighting until K2/GGG caves, must appear to GGG, as a credible threat

all that said, as a GGG fan, Loefler seems about the best fit for him among any other promoter actively promoting events among elite fighters--ie, seems like a classy bloke, for instance, i'd be very surprised to find pics of him in a fishnet onesie and red high-heels

When you consider the fact that he holds the record for wins over opponents from professions 'other than Boxing', i'd say that Wilder has been promoted pretty damn well given he is somehow a world champion.

For me, the GGG team missed a chance not getting the Carl Froch fight. As intrigued as I am with GGG v Canelo, it just simply will not be the 'war' we would have seen had he fought a prime Froch. It would've also boosted his rep in the UK hugely, far more than the Brook fight did.
