Cotto did in fact deliberately target the damaged eye of Margarito, which is fair game in boxing.

It is a genuine win, they did not stop the fight to save Cotto, and I would question the reality of anyone who would state something so insane. It was about as one sided as Vitali vs Briggs.

I think Cotto deserves some credit for the win given many people were still picking Margarito to beat him again, but the circumstances should be considered.

There was no headbutt. They reviewed the footage in slow motion. Cintron did not beat the count, he was KOed. Even then this a matter of questioning who has the more impressive win "BS draw" over a guy who wasn't that good.

Margo was coming on at the end of the second fight, I wouldn't go so far as to say the ref was in on it but I clearly remember thinking uh oh it's slipping away again

I said that there wasn't a headbutt, it was certainly a knockdown. But Cintron got up at 9 right as the round ended. Cintron thought it was a headbutt which added to the confusion, and that it was at the end of the round. The ref did verbally count to 10, but Cintron was up and the ref did not count him out. He signaled for him to go to his corner since the bell rang for the end of the round. As you can see from watching the full fight, the discussion between Cintron and the ref was about whether it was a headbutt not about him being counted out and the match continued and went the distance.

When asked why he stopped the fight he said " Margarito could not see out of his eye" LOL He couldn't see out of it from round 2. Why didn't the doc stop it earlier?? Instead of waiting till Cotto started to wilt & Margarito was beating his chest That crooked doc saved Cowardly Cotto quitting on his knees AGAIN!!

I'm with you.....GGG starts to break him apart by the 5th and gets at least one if not two KDs by the 9th or 10 th and then it's game over. Oscar will sell the, "He was not ready but will be for the rematch" to the casuals

Why use quotes when that isn't even what the doctor said? We have footage, man. He gives an extensive explanation on why he allowed the fight to continue as long as he did before finally stopping.

Again, your observations are detached from reality. Cotto was not wilting and Margarito beat his chest, after getting his head snapped back repeatedly from flush punishment. So what, he beat his chest....he wasn't beating Cotto and he was taking a beating..for 9 rounds.

But he did count him out. The fight was called. The scorecards were actually handed in. The ref changed his mind and a hurt Cintron was given extra recovery time. The whole fight was a joke. Nor does it change that Cintron simply wasn't very good and Canelo stopping a pretty awful version two years later doesn't mean much. Cintron had already suffered the Williams stretcher embarrassment and an upset loss to the unrated Molina, and just wasn't considered a serious player anymore.

There was a lot of confusion at the end of the 7th round, I'll give you that, but I don't agree that he should have been counted out. First of all, he was up at 9, just barely, but he was up. Even Kellerman on commentary agreed that he was up barely before the ref's count hit 10. The ref never waived the fight off, the bell had rung to end the round at the 9 count so the ref signaled to Cintron to go to his corner for the end of the round. I agree the ref shouldn't have verbally said "10" but the fact is that Cintron was up before he said that. The scorecards may have been handed in, however I don't think there's any way for you to know that. Martinez was celebrating as if he won, but given that the round had just ended and that the ref had said "10" that's understandable. As far as Cintron getting extra recovery time, well that's true but once again the round had ended, so he would have had time to recover regardless.

Another fact to keep in mind is that the referee had actually started the count at 5 after instructing Martinez to go to a neutral corner and I counted from the moment that Cintron had gone down and the ref should have only been at a 4 count when he said “5”. So in reality Cintron should not have been counted out, and he wasn’t. He was up at 9 after what I concluded was a fast count that started at 5.

I don’t think the whole fight was a joke, Cintron did well in the early rounds from what I can remember, the rounds that Martinez won he won convincingly but at least half the rounds were very close that you could give to Cintron. I thought Martinez deserved to win if you look at the totality of the fight (i.e. how dominant Martinez was in many of the rounds) but on a round by round basis, the draw seemed reasonable. Also the ref deducted a point from Martinez for hitting behind the head after warning Martinez early in the fight. That was certainly controversial because Cintron was ducking when Martinez hit him behind the head. So while the ref certainly can be criticized for a variety of issues in the fight, I don’t think you can make the argument that Cintron deserved to be KO’d or was KO’d. He certainly wasn’t, and the fact of the matter is he fought many close rounds with Martinez and gave him a somewhat competitive fight.

2 years later when he fought Canelo, sure he was more shopworn especially after falling out of the ring vs Williams and being stretchered out, but he wasn’t completely shot or anything like that. The fact is Canelo still managed to hurt him badly, much worse than Martinez did, and stop him is still very impressive when you consider that no one else has been able to stop him besides Margarito.

He wasn't up at "10" He was still in the process of rising. Refs don't stop the count until the fighter is up and stable. The ref did keep waving his hands, which is what prompted everyone to come in, and the damn score cards to be handed in. The fight was over.....but restarted.

He was given well over 2 extra minutes.

You certainly can, the officiating was a mess and favored Cintron. The draw was not reasonable. It was not a close fight.

Cintron's opposition is so poor, you just aren't going to be stopped by the guys he's fighting. And Martinez while a hard puncher, is not a KO artist, he rarely presses for knock outs. His ratio is only what...50%? The Williams KO was nasty but a perfect storm moment.

Molina who is basically fringe and by no means a puncher, repeatedly hurt and busted up Cintron.
