Why do people say pacquiao is an 8 div world champ?

Floyd was still a clear favourite in the DLH fight (about 1/2 on) however he was the underdog against Diego Corrales (3/2).

Floyd vs Hernandez opened with Hernandez the favourite but by the time of the bout Mayweather was a 5/8 favourite.

 

Foh! Corrales was drained in a very severe and noteworthy way and will not even make HOF, and if he does, it's the lowest possible tier of HOF.
I had it 116-112 Floyd - with most of Floyd's rounds won on the basis of a jab or two against a semi-shot tiny hospital patient. This fight thus has me convinced that Pac would win prime for prime.
8 divisions, beating greats, HOF's, elites, very good fighters, spanning 11 divisions. Truly one of the GOATs.

 

You had it 116-112, most people had it at least 118-110.

Floyd would have wiped him out in 2009 LOL, that Floyd was so defensively sound/so fast/so agile.

That's why Arum and Pacquiao never wanted it, and Roach admitted it too

 

Pacquiao's first win against Barrera (who was considered P4P #1 at the time by most rankings) is a better win than Corrales. It's just stupid to say otherwise.

 

Well he did win alphabet titles in all of those weight classes.

I remember when he moved up to LW and had ONE fight there. He took on the # 10 ranked fighter in David DIaz who just so happened to hold an alphabet title at the class. At the time, there were some pretty good fighters that pacman could've fought at that division, including Baby Bull Diaz and also another fight with JMM which would've been epic at 135 lbs.

He beat a guy who was nothing more than a gatekeeper, and than left the division after that single fight. I believe he has won lineal titles in 4 weight classes though, tied with Mayeather Jr in that regard. FLoyd was able to accomplish that feat in just 5 weight divisions, and could've easily been a lineal champ in 5 weight classes if the other champions at 140 lbs wanted to unify with Floyd. They were all there at Atlantic City in 2005 to watch Floyd's one sided destruction of Arturo Gatti, so i can't blame any of them (Cotto, Hatton, etc.,) since he would've wiped out that division with veritable ease.

Quality over quantity has always been my preference. I'm more impressed with the fact Jr was a simultaneous lineal champ of 2 weight classes. That's other-worldy IMO.

Still, Pacman is an ATG, I just don't think he was ever at the level of the other ATG of his era. No shame in that though.

 

Actually, Barrera was over hill and has always been slightly overrated.

That's a fact. It was not a great win, it was a decent win.

 

I don't even remember off the top of my head who he beat to win the paper title he won in his only fight at lightweight.

9-3 is a very valid scorecard I agree...but so is 116-112 which a lot of poeple had.
I forgot to add regarding Diego Corrales and the specific circumstance of blowing up in weight and then draining significantly to make weight, he was going to jail 12 days later and he had immense trouble the last 3 fights making 130!

 

Excuse me, but he was the 130 champion 4-5 fights afterwards. The weight draining has always been B.S and everyone knows it.

If it was so tough for him, why didn't he move straight to LW afterwards?

He fought Casamayor damn near 3 years later for the SFW belt and was still in that weight class after the Floyd fight!

 

He was still on top, and had not been defeated since the first Morales fight which he should have won, he was over the hill because Manny knocked him over it. Going into that fight Marco had shown no signs of slowing down.

 

^^Nobody put a gun to Corrales' head and forced him to take the fight.

He was universally regarded as a top 5 P4P fighter at the time and went into the fight as a 3-1 favorite. Everyone knows what happened afterward.

Merchant put it eloquently during the middle of that destruction- "It wouldn't have mattered if the fight was campaigned at 140 lbs, Corrales had no chance." That was the worst beating I've ever seen in a fight that pitted 2 top 10 P4P fighters at the time.

 

Actually yes he has, beating a shot Kevin Kelley doesn't mean he hasn't slowed down. He was always an average B level fighter, never elite btw.

 

They are all paper titles in 2017, and have been for some time. Not one governing bodies championship means anything anymore.
