I was actually optimistic after the first fight that the high skill and drama of the first one, the controversy, and the rivalry would make for a massive improvement in buys. But it seems like there's actually less attention on this one. Last time it was all about pound for pound, now there's not much talk about that. And there doesn't seem to be more mainstream talk about it (though my knowledge about representation of boxing in the mainstream is pretty much only what boxing resources refer to, so maybe I'm wrong). I think it's going to be great, but it's just a boxing match for the hardcore.
It's insane, people that know how I follow boxing have been doing nothing but asking me about Mayweather vs. McGregor. They're legit shocked when I tell them I'm not buying that fight or even having a party for it.
Honestly, I will be extremely surprised if this cracks 150k. Most of the industry is predicting about a flop of about 100k ppv buys.
200k is my optimistic estimate. It'll be lower in all likelihood. Roc and ME aren't cut out to market a fight like this properly despite having P4P talents and a timely storyline that's so easy to exploit a high school kid could figure it out. Sign on with third-tier promoters, get third-tier results. Say what you will about King and Arum, but you can bet your bottom dollar the prime versions of them would have NEVER failed to deliver a blockbuster event with what they'd have to work with here. Tex Rickard is rolling over in his grave at how they botched the boxing equivalent of adding milk to corn flakes. The first fight wasn't even profitable for some involved, and there's a damn good chance the second one won't be, either. Laughable.
160k https://www.ringtv.com/475181-ward-kovalev-just-160000-ppv-buys-source-says/ https://www.badlefthook.com/2016/11/29/13776300/sergey-kovalev-vs-andre-ward-does-160000-ppv-buys https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2016/11...d-reportedly-does-160000-ppv-buys-boxing-news
100k Hopefully it does well so Kovalev can get paid He has no guarantee and is only paid off ppv and ticket sales
The sad part is, most of them already know it. I'm guilty of signing on for freak shows like that out of morbid curiosity, so I can't throw too many stones. I don't bother watching much U.S. football or NBA these days, but if they brought out LeBron James to start at QB in the Super Bowl vs the Patriots, I'd watch it knowing full well it'd be a train wreck.
If the first one got 160k, all I know is almost everyone who bought the first will buy this, but this won't get more than 25% more. Unless we believe that a lot of people who would've bought the first didn't, because of things like the US election campaign. But easy answer I think: between 160k-200k.
Yup. I'm nervous this will tank. I was talking with a vendor yeaterday, the same guy that watched the first fight, and he had no clue the rematch was this Saturday. He was stuck on May Mac. Even tho he was talking bad about it, he was STILL talking about May Mac.
