The punch not talked about. Who are the guys with the deadliest uppercuts of all time? who used it best technically? Who could alter fights with this punch?
Chris eubank could be deadly with his. Lewis and Bowe had cracking upper cuts. Prince Hamed could alter a fight with his.
Mike Tyson and George Foreman spring to mind. Can Razor Ruddock's 'smash' be considered a real uppercut or a kind of uppercut/hook hybrid?
Its kind of a strange one ken is ruddock s. It's definitely a hybrid, I recall he called it the smash! But very effective, think he caught Bonecrusher with it before he put him out.
Holmes and Holyfield had great uppetcuts technically, but not as hard as SHWs like Lewis and Bowe. The best recent uppercutters at HW are AJ and Ortiz, both have ended fights with uppercuts
Good call on Holmes. Still remember the stunning uppercut that floored Mike Weaver and effectively ended the fight in what was one of Larry's more memorable early title defences.
Foreman. Rarest of breeds; both hands---almost always the big uppercut guys are 1 hand only and do not have the balance to throw with the other hand. And while moving his feet which is even more incredible. Another guy that could throw them with both hands was Mugabi. But he never had the footwork to try throwing while moving his feet. Like most guys, his feet had to be planted. Wilfredo Gomez was another 2 handed uppercut guy.
The weird thing about Ruddock was that before the high profile fights against Smith and later on, Dokes, he was described as being having a good left jab and strong follow up right. Yet after that it was all about the left hand 'smash' and little else. Should have changed his nickname from Donovan 'Razor' Ruddock to Donovan ' One arm Bandit' Ruddock!
He definitely became a little trigger happy with the smash ken. To the degree that a lot of the time his defence went out of the window cos he was that intent on throwing that smash! Think he tried catching Lewis with up right at the start, before lennox bombed him.
