But this wasn't that terrible a stoppage, compared to many of the terrible ones you see in boxing.

Kovalev at that point wasn't throwing anything, and was taking shot after shot.

I can see your point that in a fight of this MAGNITUDE, maybe give him one more chance?

But he wasn't intelligently defending himself at that point. He wasn't even throwing to be fair.

I would have given him one more chance at that point, but to say it was a terrible terrible stoppage? I can't say that tbh.

I'm still in complete shock, never expected the featherfisted SMW Ward to get Kovalev so hurt. If there was a stoppage I was 100% sure it would've been of Ward.

Ref told both guys before the fight that the waistband was legal. It's quite common as everyone wears their trunks above their navel.

And the cup also is that high so there is protection.

Who doubles over and begs for help when they get hit navel-high with a protective cup?

I've only ever seen them both fight once...and that was the initial fight.

I actually only 'support' UK fighters, so no i had no reason to pick one over the other.

Well...there is one exception i suppose. As a neutral, i'd be hoping for a terrific but close fight and a victory for Kovalev in the hope a trilogy.

But no, I only would've swayed towards Kovalev in order to see a 3rd....but I had Ward looking far more convincing this time.

 

Kovalev quit, deal with it. Crying about low blows, turning his back, getting rocked by a right hand and not fighting back. The ref just granted Kovalev his wish. For everything that Kovalev says he knows Ward can punch enough to hurt him and he knows he doesn't have the mental strength to hang with Andre. The light heavy division is stacked, I think Kovalev is done now. That sort of mental defeat ruins fighters.

 

It's like turning away and getting hit behind the head. I don't get all this outrage, he was finished and it wasn't because of low blows.

You're right, the waistband is legal....the problem is that he was only clipping the waist band at best. The second he clips just an inch below the band, it's an illegal shot.
