Ive seen these stamina issues for a good chunk of Kovalevs career, if the tempo is high he tires and slows down by the 6th. Luckily for him he is usually dominating the fight and the signs of gassing are overlooked and ignored. In the 1st Ward fight it happened around the same time and Ward took advantage and took control. After the fight Kov blamed overtraining and even pointed the finger of blame on certain trainers but it was nothing new. So rather than admit he has real stamina issues and deal with it they have spat out an excuse so he was never going to come into this fight really any fitter.

Ward and his squad are not stupid they picked up on this and we saw Ward holding and wrestling from the very start of the rematch, real energy sapping stuff from the very beginning and just once again drained the Russians battery even quicker than the 1st fight, he didnt really look as tired as the 1st but he was.

Headbutts, elbows, low blows stacked scoring unfair reffereeing seem to be things highlighted in many Ward fights but these things can be overcome, if your good enough and to be good enough you have to be fit enough. Kovalev would of won the 1st fight if he had done more of what he had been doing earlier it was that slowing down that gave Ward the pathway to have enough success to get the nod in many of the later rounds.

They were low blows, it was a bad stoppage, Ward is a dirty fighter and reffereeing and judging is at times a worry in America when its about certain fighters but you cant go in against somebody that good with such poor levels of stamina.

His stamina seemed totally fine in this fight. I do think he overtrained in both Ward 1 and the Chilemba fights.

Kovalev did not seem to be done in by stamina last night. He got caught with a couple of borderline body shots in the 8th round and things went downhill from there.

If you get hit with a good body shot, you're going to have issues for awhile afterwards.

Kovalev actually came out firing in the 8th round pretty good.

Nice post. I don't agree, I thought he was gassing, but appreciate the lack of hyperbole. Props, mayne.

I had Kovalev well ahead going into the 8th but you could see he was running on empty after round 6. Don't know of it's genetic or improper training but the guy just physically just can't sustain a high tempo for more than a handful of rounds before coming apart.

i question his heart more than his stamina. some of his reactions were not what i see in game fighters.

His mouth was hanging open after 5, he was still throwing a lot punches but they were forced with no power behind them.

He was clearly out of gas after 4th round.
His 'WAR' wasn't there. He lost.

There were some really strange instances in the fight were he turned away from combat and Weeks had to tell him to engage.

Can't see this. I'm pretty sure that Kovalev out-landed Ward in both Round 6 and Round 7. And he started out strong in Round 8 as well, until he got caught with a body shot with like 1:47 left in the round.

I think those were instances when he was caught with low blows.

He outlanded Ward in almost every round. He kept busy but the punches were forced and lacked snap after about 6 rounds, to me he clearly looked tired.

I'd have to rewatch but I don't remember it being in response to being hit low

Why does he get tired so easily? I assume he trains hard, the guy can run 22kms. Maybe its just mental fatigue
