He stated "Sergey wasn't throwing any punches and was backpedaling for a while in the 8th. It was so unusual to see him in that situation."

Meaning, throughout the round, at various moments throughout the round, Kovalev wasn't throwing any punches. He threw two lazy gassy punches that did nothing towards the end, but over the last minute and change of the fight, Kovalev was on the defense, generally not throwing punches, looking all rubbery legged, tired, etc. And at the very end he was just hunched over not throwing punches. You're trying to win some technical point saying "ohh here's him throwing 2 meaningless punches". You're trying to win some moral victory. Stick with the larger more relevant point that Kovalev was not throwing punches over the last minute of the fight. He was in survival mode.

I see two totally different scenarios especially with Wards quick movements and clinch. Kovalev did none of that.

    Almost nothing landed from Ward.

    That's a subjective reading.

And Kovalev landed a flush shot that sent Ward falling back into the ropes. Ropes..ring post...not much of a difference.

    Kovalev clinched too.

Kovalev's movements were slow but they still evaded most of Ward's haymakers.

But he was throwing punches and it was more than two, in the last minute of he throws quite a few punches, and he gets off about 6-8 total after he was hurt by the right hand in the final seconds. So you guys are just going to have to give up on this "not throwing punches" argument, it is factually wrong.

Of course he was in survival mode..so what?

I am correct in stating most of Ward's punches were missing, especially in the corner moments before the stoppage.

And I am correct stating Ward was knocked back into the ropes by a flush Kovalev punch.

So what do you think needs to be reviewed?

There were three final body shots the first of the trio landed legally on the belt line (legal based on the Weeks definition on the belt line) the other two landed while Sergey was positioned around a 45 degree angle surely you can agree it was an awkward position to defend and land a body shot.

I just did a compare and contrast with Wards 2nd round knock down and the rematch 8th round and without getting into too much detail the pertinent differences would be:

    1. 2nd round KD with Ward immediately coming up for the count versus 8th round where Kovalev was visibly hurt and tired without returning a punch for nearly 10 seconds. I still didn't approve the stoppage.

    2. Kovalev was being dominated for almost 1 1/2 rounds versus Wards second KD round were the argument could be made that only one significant punch landed prior to the KD which was a jarring jab from Kovalev.

I could dive deeper and elaborate more on the current climate the fight had adopted and of course the predictable end. I realize claiming Sergey would fold is merely speculation but his body language wasn't encouraging and Ward had him timed to perfection, the right hands he was landing weren't desperation shots they were premeditated and landing at greater accuracy as the fight progressed. I'm not convinced Ward is the better straight up boxer here however I'm convinced he's the more adaptive and educated operator in the ring.

Kovalev was getting peppered to the body and the head no doubt about it he had no answer for ward offense once he was hurt...

Dealing with adversity as a fighter is two fold, it requires great resilience body & mind....one of those failed for kov.

I think the thread really needs to be "without the continuous, unchecked low blows" - since had it gone on, Ward would have finished him off sooner or later with the groin punches.

Crouching at the waist is one of Ward's go to defensive maneuvers. Kovalev never blasted his nuts. If you can't get a punch off cleanly you aren't supposed to throw it. That's why Kovalev would always extend his arms to the ref when Ward would duck over like that because he legally had no room to punch.

Can you specify these 10 seconds on the ring clock. You are aware the final "three punches" even come after a Kovalev jab attempt. Kovalev never really stopped throwing for a significant amount of time, he seemed mindful of that, though it didn't matter to Weeks.

And in Round 2 of the first, a visibly hurt and defensive Ward goes from about :30 to :01 without returning a single punch. That's about 29 seconds...So assuming your 10 second claim is even right, there was still without question a bias there.

At 1:42 of Round 2, Kovalev lands a 1-2 from Southpaw that knocks Ward into the ropes and appears to shake him up. If it wasn't for the KD, that would have been the round highlight.

Kovalev was done. He didnt really protest the stoppage did he. He was exhausted again cuz of his por stamina and was hurt legally by Ward. He did get a 2nd wind in the 1st fight but i he was too far gone in this one. If he had been given 5 mins he would of lost every remaining round and lost on points again.

Wards a turd, Weeks is a turd but Kovalev can blame himself for the defeat thanks to his poor attitude in training. His superior ability has covered over all the cracks in his training camps and stamina but when he has come up against somebody with close to equal ability the cracks open up.

I never questioned his crouching technique though I doubt it was a strategic defensive move and more a natural reaction to protect his body.

Wards movements in the first fight after being knocked down were movements of a less depreciated fighter vs what Kovalev was giving back in the 8th round of the second bout if you can't tell the difference then I guess it's a moot point to continue with this particular segment of the argument.

I guess let's evaluate it this way, would you rather be Ward in the second round of the first fight or Sergey in the 8th round of the rematch? Try to ignore any knowledge of this fighters and look at this hypothetical situation from a nuetral viewpoint.
