I believe he was recovering from some health issues going into the Paret bout.

Griffith wasn't known as a big puncher, he may have thought Paret could come back but Benny had taken a bad beating from Fullmer.Goldstein only refereed one more fight after the Paret tragedy.

I saw the Griffith-Paret fight live on TV back then. (Fullmer had brutalized Paret several months earlier).

    Tough to watch those moments.
A boxer just died because the corner and the ref let it go on way too long.

Again, being "old school", doesn't make right, both in boxing terms and too many, a moral code. I will say the Patterson fight isn't as bad, but Benny, that was wrong

What's considered right can vary dramatically over time.

I think the result kind of confirms things.

I like that old school attitude. Refs in this period let the fighters determine the outcome - they let fights go to their natural conclusion, rather than prematurely terminating them, as happens WAY too often today.

That's the problem, there are still people around here who go "I like that old school attitude"...

If the fighter is that badly hurt the corner should stop it.

Fullmer said in a taped interview that he felt responsible for the tragedy.

That's what we need more deaths in the ring!
