If you compare Marciano to other all-time greats on film, his punches do seem to have a particularly numbing quality to them.

He had absolutely frightening power for a man his size.

One factor that probably made it more devastating was his abnormally short reach.

That would have made it like trying to time the blade of a propeller coming at you!

Marciano had lots of weapons he hit you with his fists ,elbows ,head, hit low and when you were down.
He ruined guys because he gave them a slow, thorough , protracted, incessant, and extensive beating. Charles ,Lastarza,Layne,C*ckell,Vingo, were never the same afterwards

The thing about this idea that Marciano was just a grinder, is the fact that we have the Layne and Walcott KO's on film.

Peralta was also a light heavy at the time .Spot the difference?
Foreman stopped him in the rematch being the only one to do so whilst Peralta was a heavyweight.
    Peralta had
    1.A great chin .
    2.Excellent defence.
Cockell had neither. Ron Lyle fought an old Peralta twice , he couldn't even floor him.
In116 fights Peralta was toped just 3 times by Foreman big punching Mina and Pastrano ,on a cut eye.
C*ckell had already been stopped 6 times when he fought Rocky.

    Very bad comparison.

And he ground them both down,He worked Layne's soft body to bring his hands down in the later rounds. He wore out Walcott to the point, he was doing what a lot of older guys do ,retreating to the ropes to catch a rest and save his legs. Moore described it, he said," he got to me by sheer bulldogging perseverance."

Maybe because he has trained 8 men who held versions of the heavyweight title?

Not for the KOs he didn't.
Those were both pure 1 punch KOs.

    Walcott wasn't dazed or stumbling.
He was neither wobbly nor off balance.
He wasn't covering up or in survival mode.

He got caught with a hellacious punch, regarded by many as the best punch ever landed.

He wore them down.Walcott retreated to the ropes Layne was almost stationary, it takes nothing away from the kos but to deny the work that went into setting them up for them is ridiculous.

It's a very useful check. Doubt I'll be using it often but good to know it's there. ;)

What is ridiculous is the revisionist attempt to alter the Walcott one punch KO into the result of a grinding beatdown.

    Wake up!
