First off, great respect to Marciano. Tone and intent can get lost on the internet. Here goes.

In almost every article I read concerning Rocky, there is the inevitable mention of him throwing shots even just to connect to his opponents arms and having huge effect on said opponent. Why was this so successful for him and why don't we see more of it in todays game? Punching opponents arms that is. Was it just the fact that he hit like a bull P4P? Do newer gloves with more/different padding make the difference? Or maybe there are fighters out there doing it, I just haven't seen them?

It's like getting a dead arm from your buddy but in this case your buddy is Rocky Marciano and he's trying to kill you. We don't see it as much because it takes an opponent to be still. If you are aiming for the arms and your in the middle of the ring then it will most likely be easy to get out of the way of.

Its much more rewarding to hit someone in the liver or behind the ear as opposed to the arm. The arm takes multiple rds to get the job done. Not many guys hit on the same level as Marciano.

Yeah, I thought maybe the strength / stamina was part of the reason. Do you think the game @ heavyweight has changed a lot since then, with more movers? I seem to recall many of Mayweathers opponents saying they would bust his shoulder if that's all they could hit, but never really saw that happen. Is there any fighter today that fights in the Marciano style? Maybe I could find them on YT.

There aren't any more movers than there were in other eras. No fighter before or since Marciano has fought in his style. Marciano had unbelievable stamina and just kept throwing punches. He just wouldn't stop. He was as fresh in the last rd as he was in the first or 2nd. Nobody has matched him and nobody ever will.

Are there any stats out there regarding how many punches per round that Rocky threw? Must have been a lot as
    he was non-stop action.

I think he threw upwards of 100 punches in a round against Charles. For a heavyweight that's crazy. I think the MIDDLEWEIGHT average is about 40.

This was the plan devised by George Benton for Spinks in the first Ali fight.

The Rock's offence was his defence.

This will get me killed but , I seriously question that Rocky deliberately aimed for his opponents arms in any kind of consistant way, he wasn't particularly accurate at the best of times. What he was is trained to his utmost peak which enabled him to throw non-stop power shots for 15 rounds. He was just happy to be landing significant punches on his opponent and, let's be honest quite a few of them strayed hither and yon.

He had terrific stamina because he trained like a monk, for up to half a year for a fight! let's not forget however that in his 6 major fights he was in with older men who were not in their absolute primes, imo Who was likely to be the fresher man going into the later rounds?

    Rocky chained his attacks together.
One punch sets up the next, which sets up the next.

He didn't wait for openings like others boxers.
He applied constant pressure, forcing the opening.
He would be content throwing a punch at your guard, because he knows it will close the distance, and that he can continue to overpower you with pressure and heavy hitting.
And this is why many of his punches landed all over the place, including the arms.

Rocky didn't shift and dance around for 30 seconds waiting for an opening.
It was constant. Forward pressure. Heavy hitting.
If you head was there, great. If your arms were in the way, they were getting it too.
