I have probably watched 20-30 Chris Byrd fights, and he achieved way more than I ever expected. His toughness against bigger (but usually slower) Heavyweight opponents was impressive. Especially with his lack of power. But, in my opinion he is not Hall of fame worthy. Simply put, because he was just not good enough to deserve induction. He came around at the perfect time to get some nice wins over fighters who either no longer had it (like Holyfield), or a number of fighters who, while no pushovers, were never really that good. (MccCline, Purrity, etc.) His win over Vitali was a fluke. He was losing badly before Vitali tore his shoulder. And Wlad dominated him badly in both their encounters. (Byrd took a savage beating by Wlad in the rematch) Ike Ibeabuchi pummeled him as well. In My opinion, Wlad, Vitali, and Ike were the only elite fighters Byrd ever fought that were still fighting at the elite level when they faced Byrd. Had Byrd stepped up during the Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis or Bowe eras he would never have sniffed a title. Just because he is arguably the most successful heavyweight to graduate from USA's Tuesday Night Fights is not enough to warrant boxing's highest honor.
no, hes jst another guy fortunate to win a HW title against less than stellar opposition. up against elite titleholders, he'd have not won anything at HW. Hes obviously world class, I'd say with potential to have been elite but didnt quite land that category.
I don't agree there. Even his biggest win vs Evander is tainted by Evander's medical problems. At LHW he fought absolutely nobody and has a ton of losses which act against him.
If Byrd gets in, Ruiz should get in. Guys like Tim Witherspoon, Trevor Berbick and Mike Weaver deserve to get in before those two.
