Ok so I know there was a huge Hagler vs GGG thread last year. Reason im picking this fight is because G had his toughest fight against Jacobs a man Pirog destroyed granted that was a while ago. Thing is G just stated that if he would have gotten Jacobs out of there there would be no Canelo fight and he wanted 12 rds of work. Sounds to me like hes implying he could have taken Jacobs out? Anyway does this fight change your opinion of G vs Hagler and how does Hagler vs Jacobs of the G fight go. Personally I feel Hagler stops Jacobs.
Not sure if GGG is telling the truth about carrying Jacobs. It is not unprecedented for a fighter to purposely look bad in order to give another fighter a false sense of security (for example, Evander's truly dismal performance against non-heavyweight, Bobby Czyz, directly before the Tyson megafight). But, given the closeness of the scores in Golovkin-Jacobs, that was an awfully risky proposition by Gennady if it is true. Either way, Hagler definitely stops Jacobs.
I can't really pick Jacobs over a dude like Hagler. MMH was just so,so proven at MW. That said, Jacobs would be a tough fight for Marvellous because he's a huge MW that moves well and has good speed and pop in his punches. Hagler would have to work for the win.
How many guys did Hagler fight who were 180 pounds on the night? None I'd guess, and Hagler is overly lauded over on these forums. Imagine if Golovkin drew with a guy like Vito Antoufermo or struggled all the way with a decade-past-his-best, far smaller Roberto Duran? If Hagler were around today, social media forums would wonder why he insisted on taking so many smaller guys while refusing to entertain Micheal Spinks. There's no reason to take it as granted he'd stop a guy as skilled, determined and absolutely massive as Danny Jacobs was versus Golovkin.
LOL - Golovkin barely squeaked by Jacobs, who doesn't exactly have a stellar record, himself, and his reputation seems to have survived intact, despite social media. Golovkin has also fought career welterweight Brook, who went straight back to 147 in his next fight, and now Golovkin is matching a light middleweight in Canelo's first fully-fledged contest at 160. I don't see either the giant Jacobs or Golovkin going north in divisions either - so, really, what point is it you're trying to make? Hagler is a top 5 ATG Middleweight, who fought other ATGs and solid contenders. Only Duran lasted the distance during Hagler's successful championship run, prior to his split decision loss to Leonard. I would, therefore, suggest that Hagler is not overly lauded - here or anywhere, since he could be argued as being perhaps the greatest middleweight, who ever lived. Hagler takes Jacobs out early.
Regardless of Antuofermo official scoring Hagler won that fight clean. He decisioned a Duran who just looked spectacular against Moore and why would a 5'8 Hagler want to go up to Light Heavy?? He was too small. Cant agree with any of your points.
Honestly kind sir. When was the last time in recent memory that a prime middleweight moved directly up to light heavyweight to take on an elite at 175? And for what reason?
This is not a walk in the park for Hagler. Jacobs is HUGE. We're talking about a likely 15 lb weight difference. Still, Hagler's jab should be the difference for a points win or late stoppage.
I agree with those who think this would be no easy fight for Hagler. Jacobs is a very good fighter and not only that he is a very big middleweight. Hagler strikes me as being a fighter who trains down to the weight oppose to cutting. I think Jacobs would be able to go back and forth with Hagler for most of the fight. I'd look for Hagler with his great round to round consistency to eventually pull a head and possibly even get to Jacobs and stop him.
Impacted post was slanted but so is yours, truth lies in the middle. - Brooke is a big WW who is the same height as Marvin, outweighed Golovkin in the ring, and would have outweighed Hagler too. Monzon and Hagler's signature wins are over WW's, Marvin's loss too, albeit against ATG WW's. - Canelo is moving down from 164 and his fight night weights have been heavier than Golovkin since 2013. Anyone trying to paint Canelo as 'moving up' is surrendering their integrity. - I would expect Hagler to win but he doesn't take him out early. Hagler wasn't a big one punch hitter and he wasn't a natural front foot fighter although he could do a good job of it when he decided to as he was a versatile and complete fighter. Dick Tiger and he won. Hagler turned pro 3 years after Tiger retired so there was very recent precedent. Robinson and Olson before him. Before Monzon and Hagler it was probably more common for MW Champions to fight at LHW at some point than not. Since the late 80's Hearns, Castro, Reggie Johnson, Rjj, Toney, Nunn, Tate, Pavlik, Hopkins were all 160 belt holders who fought at LHW. Most didn't move up directly to challenge the top dog but Pavlik and Hopkins did. The addition of 168 and its non relevance in Hagler's day obviously creates a different dynamic as do same day weigh-ins. A direct jump to 175 was less of an ask in Hagler's day. I hold nothing against Hagler for not fighting Spinks which would have been a massive ask but at the same time many underplay Duran's accomplishment fighting him 25lbs north of where he started. Hagler/Spinks is more reasonable than Duran/Hagler and guys like Greb, Walker, Apostoli, Holman, Burley, Lytell, YC3 did just that and against greater big men. Hagler waited around for paydays against WW's and lost in his third attempt but could have stepped up instead. Guys like the above mentioned deserve way more credit than most bestow them. YC3 was a 5'7 WW who beat Billy Conn, Walker duked it out with a prime Schmeling for christ sake, Lytell and Holman took on a LHW Archie as MW's. Monzon and Hagler were soft (by comparison, they'd both murder me) Golovkin is under zero obligation (like Hagler) to ever fight at 175 but admittedly if he retires without trying his luck there and testing his limits i'll be a little disappointed. If he beats Canelo i would like to see him murder Billy Joe to become undisputed, then fight the SMW Champ Jack/Degale whoever, then try Kovalev, Beterbiev, Ward or one of the top guys there. Forget gaining weight just keep the MW titles, fulfill mandatorys and squeeze in 2 or 3 super fights for voluntaries against heavier Champions Greb style.
I just see Hagler countering Jacobs all night , such a quick accurate puncher . The weight wouldn't have been a problem.
