wow ward getting 6 mil and kovalev about 1 or so million LOL, thats ****ed up, how the hell did he do that???? The guy is unbelievable, its all linked, he somehow buys the judges off, gets the belts, somehow, no idea how, gets a 6 mil fight guarantee on a fight that most likely will not sell well, mainly due to his boring, cheating style. Then the idiot ref stops the fight on a LOW BLOW!! LOL you couldnt make this **** up
i told you guys ward is boring. he cant sell. Kovalev cant sell because he doesnt have the ethnic base. seems only latinos can sell PPV. its sad because this shows boxing is in serious trouble
I disagree that only Latino boxers sell PPV. Ali, Hagler, Tyson and Leonard weren't Latinos. Ward can sell if you put him in with someone who has similar boxing skills such as Terrence Crawford. Or if you put in someone like Terence Crawford with someone like Lomanchenko. It isn't the ethnics or race it's the suspense that the fight can create in the viewer's mind. Putting in easily-beatable opponents against superstars isn't going to generate interest. What chance did Tex Cobbs have against Holmes? Zero chance. That kind of predictable garbage doesn't sell.
In my opinion, Kathy Duva failed Sergey. Due to Ward's "perceived lack of power" and the move he had to make to 175, she was so sure that the Krusher couldn't lose to him at all... and as a result, the fight contract/s reflected this. Going into the first fight, they (both Main Events as well as HBO) thought Andre Ward was going to be a good name on Kov's resume, minus the risk. This all backfired after Kov didn't get the decision in Fight 1, which is why Duva was so IRATE going into the rematch. She knew she hadn't done a good job with Sergey's rematch purse (in the event that he "somehow" lost Fight 1). Kovalev deserves better than this. His promoter and manager were made to look bad here by their own volition.
This fight sold less mostly for 2 reasons. They barely marketed the fight. The second reason is mostly everyone knew Ward had Kovalev figured out and he was most likely going to win.
As a former champion, it's time for him to expect better. The man is still a championship threat in his weight class and he's been paid peanuts with Main Events on multiple occasions, despite being the only marquee fighter that promotion has. This kind of thing is a bit troubling to see.
No wonder ward has this smug look about him all the time, he cant lose and he knows it too, even when he loses he wins, kovalev must be thinking about giving the whole thing up, he must be
Jimmy McLarnin, Kid Chocolate, Kid Gavilan, Carlos Ortiz, Dick Tiger, Roberto Duran, Carlos Monzon, Jose Napoles, Alexis Arguello, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, Felix Trinidad, Manny Pacquiao, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera, Saul Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin, Vasyl Lomachenko, Sergey Kovalev all foreign stars in American boxing. Please name me some stars of British boxing which weren't British. You don't have any that I can think of. This^
What a stupid post. So Kovalev showed he was easily beatable by Ward in the first fight? No, just no. He didn't show that in this one either, low blows or legit win, it was competitive. It was Ward's toughest test with many saying he lost the first fight. What are you even trying to say? If Ward fought someone like Crawford it would sell more? Makes no sense. It would sell less. All the fighters you mentioned were exciting in some or all of their fights and/or did something that got them attention outside the ring (Ali). That's why they sold. Ward is boring. Floyd is the only fighter who is considered boring by most of the public that was able to sell. Mostly because he talked a lot **** and people wanted to see him lose, but if you looked at the crowd during his fights, and post fight reactions from people, no one seemed to excited. They just got suckered in.
