Ward - Kovalev II does about 130k ppv buys

the guys you list were all from the 70's and 80's, except tyson, and his glory days were in the eighties. they wouldn't do squat on ppv now.

 

If you truly believe the second reason, then I have a bridge to sell you.

It makes no sense. No one in the history of boxing that had interest in a fight, especially a rematch to a very competitive one says "nah I'm not buying it, I know X guy will win because he figured out Y guy".

No, just no. If anything, it creates more interest to see if your prediction will come true. No one truly knows what will happen and will lose interest in watching it, it might play out that way, it might not, and if it does, it can still be competitive and exciting.

No one decides not to buy a fight because the think they know who will win. Why did Tyson sell then? Why did Mayweather sell then? The odds were always stacked heavily in their favor.

No, just no. Just accept it, Ward is boring.

if the numbers are true then it is more proof if proof is ever needed that ppv is killing american and rest of the world boxing as a spectatator tv sport .

with every halway competive fight and many non competitive fights on ppv it has made boxing an out of sight out of mind sport.

 

I'll wait for a source but this isn't surprising. This goes to show that it's not multiple belts or ducking or "robberies" that are turning fans away from the sport, it's that nobody even knows who the hell these guys are. Except for the superstars who develop a homegrown cult following like Canelo, who is from a country where they do promote boxing, nobody sells. Not even Golovkin, the good-natured, goofy-catchphrase-spouting undefeated KO artist can sell a PPV against credible opponents. That aspect of the sport needs a major overhaul. More free fights, more fights on network TV & ESPN, more creative advertisements, and more appearances in the public eye with other celebrities.

 

We didn't care about ppv sales when Floyd and Pac were on top, so why care now?

 

As I recall, Barrera vs Morales only got 300k pay per view buys. The only fighters who ever went over about 300k were May, Pac, Oscar, and Tyson. People really shouldn't be this surprised. I guess you could assume that pay per view numbers could keep going up forever, and there is some indication of this what with UFC and WWE making million pay per view exhibitions but maybe this is just a sign that May and Pac artificially inflated the going rates for these fights and now the market is adjusting to their actual value.

 

It's a barometer for the health of the sport. I hope the PPV model dies out but that means they have to start looking for alternatives to bring in revenue and viewers. This country is too big for so few buys.

It's 100% about the promotion, ie the lack of it. I didn't see a single advertisement for this fight anywhere. Every fight could make May/Pac type money if the promoters or managers just booked their boxers on a couple of talk shows and ran some ads on the major networks. That's how they sell all the **** movies.

 

In order to sell ppvs you have to impress a large number of fans. Kov Ward selling 130k is not a litmus test of boxing ppvs so to speak. That's just promoters trying to make a little extra money than they would make than if this were on a HBO only. And they make a lil bit more.

 

That's nonsense I think the controversial decision is what could have got more casuals involved.

Absolutely NOT true. Promotion can only take you so far. Even movies that are heavily promoted end up tanking at the box-office. Same with some fighters.

 

It's a litmus test for how well the stars of the sport are promoted. Again, see my Golovkin example, which applies to everyone in the top 10 p4p aside from Canelo and Joshua. None of them can carry a PPV, unlike the stars of yesterday. Pacquiao, Mayweather, Cotto, even Marquez and Martinez sold much more than the likes of Golovkin and Ward and Crawford.
