Now we know why Ward fought two soft opponents before Kovalev

    Victor Conte says PEDs have their greatest effect not while you're taking them, but in the period after you've stopped taking them and they've left you're system.

    Before fighting Kovalev, Ward needed to fight two unknown opponents who would not have enough clout to demand VADA testing. So he fought Barrera and Brand... without VADA testing. In this period, Ward took PEDs.

    When the time came to fight Kovalev, Ward enrolled in VADA because the PEDs had already left his system. But the effect of the PEDs was at its greatest in these fights - especially the rematch.
