I watched the ref allow Alexis Arguello to be beaten to an inch from death, but Kov gets stopped?

I thought the first two blows in the series of body punches that ended the fight were arguably on the belt line, but the last shot was low. Not extremely low like some claim, but below the belt line. Part of this had to do with the fact that Kov was doubled over at the time that the third shot landed. At that point Ward could have uppercutted Kov in the head as he was defenseless. Ward instead turned to Weeks, possibly because he himself thought that the third shot was low or possibly because he was expecting Weeks to stop it due to the defenselessness of his opponent.

I agree with the people who assert that this is a moot point. Kovalev was basically finished at that stage. It was that right hand that Ward landed on him when he was out of position and exhausted that really spelled the end. His head was never clear after that. He tried in vain to hold, but couldn't. Kov was hustled to the ropes by a guy who would not have been able to push him there if he hadn't been badly hurt. He didn't even have the instinct to take a knee, which would have at least given him a chance to recover. He banked on the ref calling the low blow as a final act of desperation when he should have taken matters into his own hands and not allowed the element of human error to even factor in, controversially or otherwise.

And I don't think the couple of shots that were called low in the previous rounds had a bearing on the outcome of the fight. We will have to agree to disagree there. One way or the other, Kov shouldn't have left it to the ref just like he shouldn't have left it to the judges in the first fight if he really wanted those W's. Perhaps that is harsh or unfair, but it is the reality of the situation.

Yes you are right. I would have loved to watch kovalev being beaten to a pulp, and Weeks stole it from me. Shame on him.

Ive got to admit I was wrong about Tony Weeks. He does have a price like Cortez, Bayless, Williams etc They have all tarnished their reputations by rendering attrocious decisions and performances ,obviously $$$$ rules in vegas

Tommy Hearns was such a great champion that he hid the fact that he broke his right hand in round 1. Just to avoid taking any credit away from Hagler.

Some fighters just get it. And some don't.

Kovalev wasn't slipping all that many shots following that right hand, Chris. With the exception of maybe one hook near that was ducked, just about every shot that Ward threw upstairs made at least partial contact and at least two or three were pretty clean. Kovelevs primary form of defense was his legs- and they weren't really supporting him all that well by that point. He wasn't chicken dancing, maybe...but the way he backed into the corner not completely of his own accord indicates that he wasn't completely clear headed.

His body language was awful (far worse than Ward's after got dropped, really); then he gets caught with three shots downstairs (first of which was legal, btw, second of which looks borderline) and is already doubled over when the last one goes in low. Fighters who react like that for that long are at risk of getting stopped.

It sucks that ended on a low blow (though not as low as Gainer-Norwood, and that result was allowed to stand); but Kovelev's body language prior to that fight is an indicator that he was starting to frazzle. Time to recover from a low blow might have helped, but with both fighters knowing that Kovalev could be hurt both to the body and head it's easy for me to extrapolate an outcome where Ward is able to grind out a stoppage in the rounds that follow. And often, the process of grinding out a stoppage can be pretty damaging to a fighter's health.

Not the greatest of stoppages, but honestly, not the worst or most groundless stoppage I've seen, either. And even if it was, I'll still quite happily stand by my assertion that it's better to stop a contest too soon than leave it too late.

Instead, he said that an ill-timed leg message left him weak-legged and unable to box effectively. Whether that's true or not does not in any way alter the fact that he used that as an excuse/explanation. Even the fighters who "get it", don't...at least not completely.

Wow you actually have points... NOT. Leonards of the world? In a topic where boxers using advantages for their own sake. You indeed DKSAB. LOL. Sit yo punk ass down and dont involve the things you dont know. Whenever you open your mouth about historical fighters you show your lack of knowledge. Just go and jerk to Froch beating Groves. Same Groves that you have been saying **** while previously you talk **** about people undermining their fav boxers opponents. Way to go hypocrite ****boi.

Ok tough guy, lets hold you & hit you as hard as Ward can (which according to the coWard fanboy (biggest Coward Merkat) is pretty damn hard, so much so the Hunter thinks he can KO Joshua ???)
& see what position you end up in whilst the low blows keep coming & no help at all from the Ref .Who (I thought) wa there to protect "EACH" fighter not just coWard...weekes should be stripped of his ref status...Love the 1st paragraph...irony at its best
