I.E., prime v prime, which fighter who lost to another fighter in a highly regarded bout (i.e., not Holmes Ali, or another instance where virtually no one debates the loser was anywhere near prime), do you think would win more than 50% of the time with both in top form.

My pick from above is Vital against Lewis. Personally, I think that especially in the modern era, experience is more important than youth, unless clear decline is indisputable. So, I think prime AJ ( who we haven't seen yet) probably beats prime Wlad. I think Pac and May were at similar levels of decline, and any match would have rolled out similarly. But I think Vitali had a cut such as he never had before or after Lewis. That points to it being fairly flukish. Up until the cut, he was fairly dominating Lewis, and generally had his way even after the cut. And then Lewis declined a return despite huge money. I think Lewis always poses VK problems, but I'd wager VK generally doesn't get cut and consequently wins more often than not when he can actually see LL.

Feel free to name another fighter I left off. Before voting for the last option, though, keep in mind Ali and Louis, who both got to avenge their biggest loses. If their opponents had refused to rematch them, they'd have a huge hole in their resumes that doesn't currently exist.

Lewis cuts Vitali's face up in any fight they have. Vitali was incredibly easy for Lewis to land huge punches on and a younger and fresher version of Lewis would have had a lot more success. I'm not really sure why you mention Lewis declining the rematch as it has nothing to do with your question, but I don't blame him for retiring then as he was going to do it after the Tyson fight. It must be very difficult to motivate yourself when you have made $150million in your career and I will certainly not blame Wladimir either if he decides to retire instead of taking a rematch because he has thoroughly earned the right to, as did Lewis.

Very logic based response. Except, well, no. Plenty of others could talk about how Lewis made public statements about wanting to fight for years more. And how often has a fighter lost by cuts to the same fighter twice in a row? Henry Cooper was the last HW I can remember, and Henry had a history with cuts, unlike Vit.

Wlad over AJ is pretty clear to me although AJ can still improve.

I thought Vitali was on his way to a win over Lewis if not for the cut but that was not prime Lewis. Wasn't yet Prime Vitali either in terms of confidence on world stage but I rank Lewis higher than Vitali.

I like Pac's resume better than Floyd's but Floyd wasn't troubled much in their bout.

    Wlad is my pick

    Mathisse postol

Mathisse is 1000000x better than postol. Actually I've always believed mathisse took a dive (and took the bet money too).

    Maidana khan
Yes, khan won that fight. I would have liked to watch a rematch just after robert garcía trained maidana. It would have been a snuff movie.

    vargas de la hoya.
Man, I know I'm alone in this one, but that F vargas was F supposed to win that piece of **** de la hoya. De la hoya wearing his belt the same way he would wear a scarf.... fml, I know I'm not right. F M L.

    Buster douglas mike tyson
Come man, tyson is better than buster....

Tbh, I think that history is full of fighters that lost to a worse opponent. That's life....

If Vitali wasnt cut it would of been a very different fight - Vitali would have paced himself more and it may of turned into a chess match - Which would of favoured Lewis too.
I think Herol Grahame Julian Jackson could fall into this catagory tho

Good responses, but I think most people accept an on form Tyson would have beat Douglas. Although there are all those "classics" crazies who love to talk about "Toyko Douglas"
