If he beat Dino Denis and Larry Frazier he'd be well above the likes of Lewis, Bowe and the two Klits. I bet Joshua thanks god every night Leroy Jones isn't around to open a can of whoop a$$ on himself and the rest of the division.

I see fighters like this win heavyweight fights all the time. Tyson Fury has fought in the same body shape as jones looked against Larry and Tyson still won. That is fighting shape for SHW.

Jones work rate was ok for his size. He was still fighting back gamely. He wasn't blowing like a guy who had not trained. He would not be classed as fat today. He was simply a good super heavyweight against old school HW.

This is a good post. Everything used for excusing Charles Martin as a relevant fighter today applies to Tyson Fury too. He succeeded where others failed because he had the right attitude, fortitude and going into a SHW fight, as a big man, had no more going for him than Leroy Jones against Larry Holmes in 1980.

I actually see Tyson Fury v Larry Holmes becoming a repeat of Larry Holmes vs Leroy Jones.

As you say,it just goes to show the importance of levels in sports.

Since 2016 these guys have contested for major heavyweight titles. By my reckoning Jones was in as good or better shape than five of eight world title challengers in the last 12 months.

    6'5" Gerald Washington 239
    6'3" Chris Arreola 246
    6'3" Arthur Szpilka 233
    6'5" Lucas Browne 250
    6'2" Andy Ruiz jr 255
    6'5" Charles Martin 245
    6'4" Eric Molina 237
    6'7" Dominic Breazeale 255

6'5" Leroy Jones was 255, he's actually lighter and smaller than Dominic Breazeale. He is certainly less fat than the three inch shorter Andy Ruiz jnr! And jones no different in shape really to Lucas Browne, chris Arreola. Ten pound lighter Charles Martin only looks a meal or two different in shape at exactly the same height as Jones.

I don't think Andy Ruiz jnr looks any more solid than Leroy Jones. In fact I would go so far as to say Ruiz jnr is not only flabbier than Jones, but that he is one of the better boxers at heavyweight today. And this buxom appearance of his did not stop Ruiz jnr from taking Joseph Parker to a decision close enough to go either way.

I see no reason why Leroy Jones who also fought a lot of long distance fights, was known for his boxing ability was not better than Larry Holmes made him look.

I think we have to accept that heavyweight today has become a Leroy Jones type division. This type of body shape fits right in and meets current criteria. This is what Superheavyweight has become. A division of men who train to maintain more weight. Some look more solid but some don't. Breazeale did not look solid against Joshua. Ruiz jnr did not look solid and neither do a lot of rated HW contenders and challengers.

Lucas Browne, a drugs cheat, looks no better either.
