As BTO once sang, You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet. Prepare to see any and all means to not only bring down Tyson's opponents, but also to boost Holmes ordinary string of them up. Saad, myself and a couple of others put him true months ago but it all bounced off. Berbick had miles less on his resume going into the Holmes fight than he did when going into Tyson. Prior to Holmes he had the Mercado loss and wins overly nobodies excepting Tate who looked terrible coming off the Weaver KO (unconscious for several minutes) and was advised to retire in many quarters. Coming into Tyson he hadn't been beaten in 3 1/2 years, stopped Bey who had just fought reasonably hard against Holmes and on top of that won the title off Thomas in a career best win. Pinklon had been running hot with superb wins over Weaver and Witherspoon. You can safely say Berbick was in his peak period when Tyson beat him. Read my posts concerning the massive differences in the scrutiny and favor of Holmes opponents Roy Williams and Leroy Jones and Tysons in here. It cannot be any more clear.
Berbick was Tysons best win. You are correct. At that point Berbick was as good as he was going to get. I don't dispute this. I have Never had a problem with Berbick as a good win for Tyson. In comparison to current SHWs my case for Leroy jones and Roy Williams stands up. But this is an unrelated issue.
Where did i say Berbick was Tyson's best win? Some might argue Spinks is. Some might even put Thomas and Tucker up there. Some might even mention Ruddock and say their two bouts destroyed him but i rarely dish out passes like that myself. Berbick or Spinks.
Some might even put Thomas and Tucker up there As what? Tyson's best win? If they did They would be dead wrong to do so. Thomas was a good fighter in 1984 but had slipped so alarmingly between the Weaver and Berbick fight that everything points to him never being the same again. On top of that, Against Tyson it had been too long since Thomas had beat a good man. Tucker? He went 34-0 (29) 1NC prior to facing Tyson. He had beat Buster Douglas for the vacant IBF HW world title, WTKO10. The fight was even after 9 rounds. He also beat James Broad W12. Broad had been stopped in the 2nd round by Tim Witherspoon and outboxed by Marvis Frazier, L10. He decisioned a washed up Jimmy Young. The other guys he beat prior to facing Tyson really sucked. One of the worst 34-0 records I've ever seen. He was at least live against Tyson and put up a good fight. But that's all. Even so, I really don't get Tuckers appeal. I think Ernie Terrell was a much better fighter.
Who else destroys the crop of contenders like Tyson did? Who else goes through that line of defenses and wins every fight as dominating as Tyson did? If he didn't get you out of there early, he got your out eventually. And if that didn't happen he'd win a clear cut, comfortable decision on the scorecards.
Tyson took care of business. Of course he did. But I imagine much of the very best champions fed the same guys in the same order do the same thing. There is nobody there beating a great fighter I don't think.
I have seen people thrust Tucker forth before. He didn't do enough post Tyson to overly rate but many are quite big on him. Taking a positive stance (like you do with opponents of fighters you promote) one could say the only fight Pinklon Thomas lost in 9 years going into Tyson was Berbick. He was a titleist only 14 months prior. He actually put up a pretty spirited effort.
Name your list who would have went thru them so convincingly? We are talking a helluva lot of devastating early ko's here.
Exactly. The heavyweight who came closest would probably be Joe Louis, before and after his defeat to Schmeling. But he lost to Schmeling first...
yeh that is a major diference between louis and tyson. louis losing, that galvanised him into never wanting to lose again. tyson, he just let it go.
