Timing beats speed , everybody who understands boxing knows that. Plus he compensated good punching technique for high volume slaps which often left him wide open down the middle. He had a major weakness to straight right hands throughout all his career.

Even British level Woodhall who was at the end of his career was lighting him up with right hands. He couldn't miss and it was echoed by the commentary team who were staggered at how easily Woodhall handed the straight right hand.

Kovalev is far from basic , his timing , power and distance control is some of the best in the sport. He is a master of controlling the range and is a nightmare to get close to.

Somebody who is susceptible to right hands like Calzaghe is at major risk of getting destroyed by Kovalev.
Well timed power shots will neutralise high volume as you saw when he fought Cleverly.
Subtle foot movement and good timing made Clevery ineffective and that guy went on to break the record of punches thrown in a light heavy weight fight.
You simply can't rely just on volume alone to succeed at elite level . Ward took Kovlaevs best assets out of the game with athletic educated footwork and out -worked him on the inside.
With no fear of Joe's power Ward would out -muscle and out -brawl him on the inside like he did with Kessler ,Green and Froch. Or Ward would land the better quality work from the outside since his defence and upper body movement his far superior to Joe who often fought square on with little to no defence.

 

Would that right hand Ward landed on Kov in the 8th knock out Joe cold or just knock him down for the 10 count and he leaves the ring under his own power?
