Mercer on a good night wins a comfortable UD, Mercer at one of his off nights might get upset in a close decision.
Not to mention that he gave Lewis absolute hell in a close fight... Planet Dino is indeed a very strange place. Mercer on that night easily beats comeback Foreman.
Neither did comeback Foreman(without controversy anyways) Except for Moorer in a fight he clearly was losing. Washed up drunken Cooney isn't a great win, he was a complete shell of himself at that point.
Does not matter. Foreman won the the hwt title in 1973, lost it in 1975 and then rewon it 1994....20 years later. The greatest achievement ever in all of sports history. He is rated in my top five all time.
Mercer was tailor maid for any version of foreman. It becomes a battle of jabs from round 1, then it quickly becomes an exciting slug fest before mercer realizes hed been tricked and gets stopped sometime in the 6th.
Mercer was not very good. Good chin and decent power but that is all. Foreman had more power and a better jab. This is a grueling fight. I pick Foreman. Old Foreman still had power, which is what he always had. Foreman decision
Mercer would've LOVED to fight Old Foreman. You kidding me? Bowe and Mercer were salivating at the chance to get Foreman in the ring. Every time Old Foreman stepped up his competition he struggled, with the exception of Pierre Coetzer who was coming off 2 straight KO losses to Bowe and Bruno. And of course the incredible win over Moorer. The 14 year old me says Foreman wins a classic slugfest, the 40 year old me says Mercer wins a comfortable decision.
When the hell did Mercer ever win a decision over an elite boxer, let alone one with power and a solid chin?
Both bouts with Holyfield and Lewis were close, especially the Lewis brawl. And TIm Witherspoon at that time came to fight. There was a resurgence in his career and it showed. Mercer won a disputed decision against Spoon, so there's your answer. Let's not overrate Ol Foreman here. Elite? Mmmm, maybe. Not really. Take out the Moorer upset and you give the same question to Foreman that you just presented for Mercer.
Come on man, mercets only decent win against an elite opponent is a 36 year old spoon...a fight in which spoon landed 10% more punches than mercer. If u want to give him props for the holyfield and lewis losing efforts, give foreman credit for being competitive with a PRIME holyfield and going 12. He landed the same number of jabs as holy, thats elite. Schooling a young prime hard punching briggs, landing like 60 more punches at 50 years old is elite. He was clearly robbed. And briggs went on to knock mercer out! Knocking out a prime undefeated hard hitting southpaw is elite. There is no luck in boxing. The fact you want to remove this win in order to prop up mercers poor resume says a lot. The guy was exciting to watch but he was 1 dimensional and lost virtually every time he stepped up. He was the david lemiuex of the 90's a poor mans foreman. He isnt knocking foreman out and i have serious doubts about him winning a decision--especially if he fights up close and personal slugging (the way he usualy did). So...how could he win? Even if he tries to "box", foreman had the more consistent stronger jab and better ring generalship.
Stylewise this is a difficult matchup for Ray. Standing in front of Foreman is normally a recipe for disasters.Nobody dared to stand in front of old Foreman. Mercer does not move much.On that basis., I have to favour Forman.
Did I say Mercer is knocking Foreman out? And you're using Briggs as an example? Briggs S U C K E D. Who did Briggs beat, besides a 49 year old Mercer? That's right, a 48 year old Foreman. To this day I have no clue why people see Briggs in any positive light. He accomplished far less than Old Foreman or Mercer.
