I watched that fight on youtube lately. Donald had spurts in that fight, but the HBO crew was giving him too much credit for things and not saying what Mike was doing well. Ray was being sued, so the HBO guys were going too much the other way and praising Donald to sound fair. But Donald's eye was being swelled up by Mike's jab, and Mike was starting to land body punches and was really beating up Donald on the inside in round 4. Then in round 5 Donald backed off a little and tried to get inside and punch and pull out, and he was caught pulling out.. I thought Mike was too strong for Donald in that fight and the punch which landed was less fluke like than people think. Donald did well, but it only lasted 5 rounds and it was not a war kind of fight.

Gorman became subversive...akbar Muhammed got his claws in...weight drained in his last 2 fights at WW he basically has three consecutive opponents billygoat headbutt him repeatedly and in 2 cases deliberatly...the 300 plus amateur fights....a relative dying...and the slight technical glitch of leading with his face which he never did at 147...lastly srl misled him....but check out how even a shot curry was outboxing mccallum...was even with nunn after 8 and presented a few issues to norris....prime curry beats all 3....i disagree with some ...the two wins over a starling at his best and most motivated say a lot...i think srl aside he could have taken out hearns ,benitez and the no mas duran

I don't see Curry beating Hearns or Duran or Ray. Why? He stood right in front of guys with a wide foot position, which made him have great counterpunching. When he got older his head moved less, so he was hit more. And when I say older, not really that much older.. Great handspeed, but hearns jab would have landed easily and his right... Duran would have found his way to knock out Donald's style and Ray was Ray. but I think he was very good and could have maybe been a great had he made a few different decisions. I think McCallum. I never saw him really dominating Mike like other's thought. Round one they felt each other out a little. Round two Mike started to land and left himself open and Donald landed a nice right. Round 3 another round where Mike was recovering and Donald's eye was becoming more swelled with the jab of Mike,, round 4 Donald tried to take it to Mike, but Mike is starting to take over on the inside and in round 5 Donald starts on the outside since he was getting hit easily in round 4 on the inside. and he was knocked out walking straight back. Donald had a great style for a few years sort of like Mike Tyson did. It was a young man's style, but any slowing down and he is getting hit clean because their style depended on head movement, or offense being their defense.

I have always wondered what would have happened had Donald's eye not swelled against Mike.

They did an interview with Donald a few years back, and he was addressing kind of sideways, saying Ray was who he was. He should have given Leonard the pimp slap treatment.

Personally, I think the Honeyghan loss affected him in a lot of different ways.

I rewatched the mccallum fight last night and its clear don was already pretty shot .he just didnt seem as sharp and that had nothing to do with the quality in front of him. After 404 amateur bouts and weight problems since 1984 it had all taken a toll.

I stand by my assessment....the curry of 1984/85 albeit a short prime was exceptional

Did you watch the HBO version? CBS redid it, but I think did the commentary after the fight. Which they sometimes did with Gil and Tim.. Did you notice how Mike was doing better than the commentary said he was?

Oh please. After Honeyghan Don was done.
McCallum was getting outboxed by a shot Curry. He wasn't planning some great attack to stop Curry. He was getting outboxed by Curry even almost getting knocked down in the second.
Curry listened to the wrong people and it cost him.
Hearns,Leonard,Benitez Curry could have held his own with them when he was at his best. Not saying he wins but he isn't a walk over and he had the skills and power to beat those 3.

I think he would have done better, but Mike was peaking in 1987 and Donald looked like he was too, but a peaking Mike was better than a peaking Donald and could counterpunch as good or better than Donald.. and was bigger naturally. the strength factor was big in that fight. Ironically, that fight was I think 30 years ago today. I could wrong about Curry vs. McCallum I think this is the anniversary. Everytime Mike landed Donald was rocked. I cannot say Mike was rocked that much.

Mike was losing the spurts or the exchanges a little, but that was Donald's quicker hands, but Mike was counterpunching more effectively and landing bodypunches more and more and was stronger. Sort of like Curry was winning the exchanges, but Mike was winning the fight.

Have to agree with this overall. Curry never made such an elementary mistake either before or after in his career.mccallum was a master to capitalize its a measure of him as a fighter but even a shot curry was handling mike fairly easily.im not going back on what i said i rewatched the fight a third time with commentary off.i still had it 3-1 going in to the 5th.

Have any of u seen nunn-curry recently? A brilliant performance by a utterly shot curry if that makes sense.don gassed as he did frequently at the end of his career but was perhaps up after 8 certainly even on my card.....nunn himself said don curry was the best overall boxer he ever faced and said his skills were insane (ring best i ever faced)

I think gorman was the catalyst for everything.he was hellbent on his 28% he briefed against don to the immature slanderous jeff ryan/farhood/katz/matthews new york cabal of boxing magazines....don was a very sensitive introverted man...it wore him down...akbar muhammad actually gave pretty good advice to curry v nunn in the corner but he was no cornerman

Two things would have changed currys destiny post summer 1986.

Obviously shoulda moved up to light middle .

Changed gorman/akbar for eddie futch or gil clancy, emmanuel steward to train manage him and if he really needed srls influence got ray to pull in mike trainer as his manager...but the treacherous srl was never gonna allow it....id have settled for futch or clancy either wouldve done a great job.

All 3 would have prevented Don from lapsing into that career altering defensive glitch of starting to lead with his face which gil clancy first identified before the mccallum fight.

A peak rested curry in those circumstances coulda been the one to beat mccallum and a fading hearns in 1988...defences with benn and a duran than a superfight with nunn for late 89...i see him winning all these fights before a superfight with srl in 1990 where he does what norris followed by a knockout rematch defeat to hearns in 1991...and retirement as one of the ATG"s

Probably would've taken Hilton, Mugabi, and Duane Thomas as well under those circumstances.

I cannot see Curry beat a faded Hearns in 1988. Barkley was a big strong guy, Curry was not and Hearns was strong and sharp. I see him taking Curry out in a tough fight, but Hearns had more what is it called toughness. He could fight hard and come back and land hard. That mistake Curry made with Mike in round 5 was due to the swelled eye perhaps.. it is hard to understand. I think Mike was beating him inside and Donald was preoccupied with the eye and was trying to land punches in exchanges and pull out. and Mike got him.
