I just saw his latest fight where he quit against Castellanos, a guy with a 24-12 record. I would never have thought that a guy of his talent would actually retire on his stool against a journeyman. What exactly happened that caused his career to just plummet? Long lay off, promoter, Crawford? I think at this point they should try still try and match him up with another washed up fighter that he was supposed to fight years ago: Juanma Lopez. Could be an entertaining fight, maybe?
Time moves on its a natural progression. Father time steps in the ring along with a opponent and the next thing you know your fighting two guys in there father time and the young lion. Happens to them all. bunch of young hungry lions roaring seeking whom they can devour . spence, gervanta usyk, joe smith jr, joshua, charlo, crawford, they all would like to add a battle worn atg to their resume.
Don't let Castellanos's record fool you he is more a journeyman, but yeah Gamboa's career has went down in the toilet.
Castellanos has been springing upsets for years. I guess some "fans" still haven't caught on how turning pro in Mexico as a complete novice with zero coddling and harder match making work.
He had no business fighting crawford. He never had the best chin or defense but he got old quick as well
He's too short for 135. He should have stayed a featherweight. Probably training all wrong, cause he's put on all that muscle too. And on top of it all he was old and inactive.
He is the sort of fighter who's exceptional in one weight class and just not the same fighter as he moves up - i.e Wilfredo Gomez. He was extremely athletically gifted in his prime, and his athleticism made him near untouchable at 126lbs. The thing is...he used his athletic ability a lot in his game - that's the first thing to go in boxing as you age. Additionally, Gamboa's muscle was just too big for his frame, too so he just couldn't boil back down to 126. Also, ring inactivity accumulating over the years (fighting once a year until 2017). To me, I knew he was done when I was watching the Michael Farenas fight. If a prime Gamboa was naturally Terence Crawford sized, Crawford would've been knocked spark out - the evidence from their fight is as clear as night and day. That just emphasises how good a prime Gamboa was, P4P.
I wonder if Rigo would get knocked out if he jumped up in weight the way Gamboa "recklessy" did. People forget that Gamboa himself was a P4P phenom several years ago (Like some compliment Rigo) and if you need actual proof of his class... well, that clear win over Salido sure looks good when you consider Siri's run the past several years.
