Aah, but did he ever run10 miles with an Elk on his back, sprint a hundred yards in under 10 seconds , or high jump 8 feet from a standing start? I bet he never lifted a train back on its track either? You do realize Jeffries never hit a man with his full power because he knew no one would be able take it and survive ,don't you?
Making due allowances for the quality of the film ,Jeffries looks as stiff as a poker here against Ruhlin. http://fightfilmcollector.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Gus Ruhlin He had the pwer to drop Frazier but I wonder how many punches would he have taken trying to get in with his own big shots ?
It probably didn't help that he only had one good arm when he fought Sharkey. I give Sharkey all the credit in the world for his gutsy performance, but I doubt that he last the distance against a fully fit prime Jeffries.
How was Jeffries arm in the other Sharkey fight in which Tom went the distance?lol Did you know Sharkey fought some of the second Jeffries fight with a dislocated arm and broken finger?
Jeffries can win this, but is he likely to? He relied on toughness and the willingness to absorb punishment to eventually overcome smaller ,older men .That would be a very dangerous tactic against Smokin Joe ,imo. The attitude of the referee towards facial damage might be crucial here.Jeffries was cut in several fights,Frazier tended to lump up. I don't see Frazier koin'g Jeff but he could tko him with facial damage imo. Jeffries could probably ko Frazier if he caught him flush, with a big shot and was able to follow up with a salvo, but from reports of his fights he seems to have been a very methodical, risk averse fighter. Frazier was a volume puncher and he threw that hook all night. How would Jeffries cope with that pace and the bobbing weaving stance of Frazier?
As far as I know Jeffries arm was fine in the first fight, but Sharkey seems to have fought to survive, as opposed to taking the fight to Jeffries. Also they were both green anyway. If they both had a significant arm injury, that is just going to work against a knockout generally. Are people perhaps reading too much int these fights?
No its just one poster making excuses for the fact that Sharkey was still there and full of fight at the finish of both fights .
I don't see him coping with Frazier at all well tbh. Jeff may try to out muscle him but Frazier s like a tank. Those hooks will just keep on smacking in to Jeffries head and body. It would be painful to watch and hopefully for Jeff a good ref to stop it.
Thanks for the footage and info. Hard to tell how good he was based on that film footage. Of course his previous record prior to the Johnson fight indicates he was formidable assuming that his opposition was as formidable as described. One thing about that article that struck me as quaint is Jack Johnson not giving fighters of his own race a chance to challenge him for the world HW title. Weird! BTW He obviously was a stalker as was Frazier so the outcome would have been likely determined at ring center.
