If Jim Jeffries , Gene Tunney, and Rocky M arciano had asked your advice before they retired?

Lets say that they had asked your advice before thy arranged press conference.

What would you have told them to do?

Obviously you don't know the outcomes of any future fights that they could have made.

You do however know what those wins/losses would have been worth in hindsight.

So what should they do?

 

Jeffries - Fight Jack Johnson you ****ing c*cksucker
Tunney - You're good bruh
Marciano - Fight Floyd Patterson dude

 

Jeffries--if legacy is your goal, fight Johnson and Hart, probably starting in 1904. Munroe did nothing for your legacy.

Tunney--Your legacy is thin. A couple of top fights, let's say Godfrey & Sharkey or Schmeling would really move you up, probably starting in 1928. Heeney didn't do much for your legacy.

Marciano--A fight with Patterson would probably still be a couple of years off. Retiring is the smart move.

 

Marciano - 50-0 sounds a lot more impressive than 49-0.

 

I would say good on you fella, get out now whilst you still have yer marble s!

 

And to Jeffries I'd say, don't fight that Jack Johnson guy if he ever becomes champ, he'll probably kick ur ass..

 

In practice yes, they all got out at the right time.

But that is a boring answer.

 

OK then. To Jeffries I'd say good job your not around in 60 years from now. Cos ull get your ass kicked by Joe Frazier

Thank you for your kind advice future boy. While it would not be correct fort me to defend my title against this Mr Frazier, owing to his skin color, I would be happy to brawl with him in the cellar.

 

Thank you for your advice. I definitely dodged a bullet by not having to defend my title against George Byers. I know that Tommy West beat him, but that guy is a psycho!

Why, is there some black contender out there who poses a particular risk?

I thought that the challenger picture was basically between Jack Sharkey and Johnny Risko.

Jeffries -
i would advise him of 2 options.

Option 1
One last night of fighting.
Langford, McVey and Johnson - 3 rnds each all in the one night. They knock him out they win the wold title. Jeffries retires, win lose or draw.
This option cements and enhances his legacy, without really taking to much of a risk. (particularly when/if i get them to wear the cuffs!)

Option 2
One last fight. Jack Johnson 6 rounds, no decision. If Johnson lasts the distance, Jeffries retires and gives his belt to the winner of a Johnson v Hart Championship match. This would give Jeffries the legacy clincher without any risk. It woud also keep open the option of the big money option of a Johnson Jeffries Nevada fight since nothing would really be proved by the ND fight. If possible i would probably also connvince him to make his Nevada fight a 12 rounder (at the 'insistece' of the champion (JOhnson))

Tunney -
Tough one here.

Godfrey would be a legacy booster, but also a massive risk. I would say it is a huge risk, medium reward fight. Wills might be worth a shot since Tunney was criticised for not fighting a black fighter and he was a big name, but the Uzcuden fight makes it a low risk low reward and in fact he would probably be massively criticised for taking the fight with better fights around. Sharkey is high risk, low reward, as are others like say Schmelling, Uzcuden, Gains etc. The biggest thing that really Tunney could have done was get a bit of street fight style credibility and somehow add a toughness to his image. Realistic his retirement was perfect.

Maybe i would have him announce his retirement from the ring, get ambushed at the press conference by the world Wrestling champion Ed Lewis (the strangler?), Set up a Boxer vs Wrestler challenge which Tunney would win and then arrange for a post fight melee which Tunney would also win. Perhaps even spread a few 3 wrestlers on one bar fight stories before Tunney retires.

Marciano-
Another whose retirement was perfect.

But if forced to milk that little bit extra, i would issue an open invitation to any fighter in the world ranked in the top 10. I would put all of the names in a hat and i would rig the draw so that Sugar Ray Robinson's name would be drawn out of the hat. I would even instruct him to make sure that he carries Ray Robinson to a draw.

Years later on the internet, i would point out that Marciano beat the greatest heavyweight Joe Louis, the Greatest Light heavy - Ezzard Charles, the Greatest Middle, welter and pound for pound fighter ever. PLus he retired as 50 and 0 never beaten by anybody. Surely this makes him the greatest fighter to pull on the gloves, ever.

 

But I won't risk my title against him because I am sh*t scared at the prospect of a black man winning the heavyweight crown!
