Your thoughts on this champ who died from injuries suffered in a bout against Sugar Ramos. I don't recall ever seeing a thread about this fighter, insight is much appreciated.
Long article on Davey Moore (Featherweight), but covers most of the issues. Moore was champ for 4 years and defeated some of the top Hispanic fighters. In the Sugar Ramos defense, Moore was knocked down in the 10th round. The back of his neck snapped against the ropes when he fell. He never recovered and died 75 hours later. This Davey Moore, unlike the Davey Moore who fought Duran, is one of the least mentioned champions that I know of..maybe Hogan Kid Bassey, who Moore won the title from, is equally obscure....anyway, Bob Dylan wrote and recorded a song,..."Who Killed Davey Moore"...and whereas Dylan, believe it or not, wasn't trying to condemn boxing, ...he said it was just a song,...others did use Moore as a "cause celeb" in their efforts to see boxing banned. I definitely agree. I love the classic forum, but I wish we'd see more threads about great obscure champs and contenders. No disrespect to Ali, Marciano, Louis, etc but we get tons of threads on those guys. We rarely get any about Nino Benvenuti, Emile Griffith, Bennie Briscoe, Salvador Sanchez, the list is endless. These guys all deserve to be remembered and mentioned
These four you mention were big favorites of mine....I closely followed thre Griffith-Benvenuti trilogy, and Bad Bennie was unfortunate to have been challenging Carlos Monzon....he would have been champ vs virtually anyone else that night with that haymaker he landed in round 10....Sal Sanchez was an 80's favorite of mine. Other obscure champs I'd love to read about in this forum are Mario D'Agata, Robert Cohen, Alphonse Halimi, Yoshio Shirai, Carlos Teo Cruz, Ben Villaflor, Paul Fuji, Hogan Kid Bassey, Saoul Mamby, Leroy Haley, etc.,...I too am a bit tired of nothing but the same big names mentioned all the time.
Cobra, I remember when I started watching boxing in the early 80's, for me it was Freddie Roach, Billy Costello, Terrance Alli, Harry Arroyo, Nino Larocca, Gene "mad dog" Hatcher, James "hard rock" Green, Johnny Bumphus, among others.
