Maybe. I tend to believe him, but you could be right.

My statement "proves" was too strong ... but I still think: a) Ortiz is in his forties; and b) most likely he did fight Whitaker.

Actually Wlad looked better than he ever had against Joshua and that is why he got the props that he did. He rose to the occasion. All I know is that his listed age shows him to be younger than Wlad and I take the man at his word until it's proven otherwise.

Did that interview where Ortiz states he fought Whitaker ever come to light though?

Might be informative to see the context.

If Wilder wins I want no excuses about Ortiz being old because he is still the most ducked HW in the division.

There's definetly an error in his partial amateur record, though. It says that he fought Whittaker in august of 1984, which was the summer olympics time. And the Luis Ortiz that Whittaker fought in there was Puerta Rican.

Yeah, I think the amateur record there looks a little too questionable, but there may still be an interview where Ortiz talks about fighting Whitaker.

He also states that he's 38 years old. You chose to believe one part of what he says and not the other. That's selective. I take the man at his word until proven to be otherwise. It's no knock on Wilder because regardless of how old Ortiz is, the fact remains that he is a formidable opponent. Hearn knows that and that's why he chose to go in the other direction in his mandatory choices for Joshua. Wlad didn't want none either so I give big ups to Wilder and hopefully if he is victorious then he can get that money fight with Joshua. I think that he will win against Ortiz.

I don't believe this for a second. Sounds like more talk and hot air from Wilder and his cronies.

How can you trust a guy that only looked outside of the top 10 for every one of his 5 voluntaries in a row?

There is also a big 'clue' when he has said in pressers and interviews that apparently he used to watch Ali fight for the title live on TV when he was a kid growing up, and that is what inspired him to box.

That's a pretty good post for a dingbat.

I agree with most of it, just not as positive as you Wilder will win. I would bet on him to win but not a lot simply because I think its a close fight and Wilder even after close to 40 fights has not stepped up to date. Thus Ortiz is a big step up for Wilder there is no doubt.

I want Wilder to win however, yes I would enjoy the laugh if he didn't but more than that I want Wilder to win vs Ortiz so as he earns his shot against AJ and then that fight will be for all the marbles, assuming both guys make it that far.

Heres the thing, that impressive Jennings KO was already two years ago. I think Wilder would deserve credit for fighting a genuine contender if this comes off, but he will have to build from it, and keep going against top 10 guys to turn his reputation around. This could be a step in the right direction but also a fairly calculated one.

I also think this would be a little iffy given he used positive PED testing as a reason to refuse Povetkin.
