If he beat Whitaker he would have been a king in Cuba????
Why didn't he fight again for another decade +

Pernell Whitkaker was a blue chip prospect, beating him in the amateurs would have been a huge thing at the time, what did he do for the rest of the 80's and 90's? its bizarre you guys are even considering it to be true!!!!

Ortiz also happens to be 6ft4??? So he beat Sweet Pea when he was a child or what?

    Perhaps that's true.

I also struggle with the logistics of it.

He must've been quite young (certainly we can all agree Ortiz isn't in his 60s), so wouldn't he still have been in Cuba? How could he have fought Whitaker, except in some large international event?

I don't know enough about the amateur scene to evaluate whether that's reasonable.

He would have had to be 12 or 13 or something, sort of like Usyk fought in the am's as a welterweight for a bit.

Still, it's a tall story, but on the other hand @houmzz is usually pretty accurate.

Plenty of other clues do exist though, like mentioning watching Ali live, look at his face, etc.

Yes, the story is sorta looking fishy. I tried to find it but failed.

Maybe it was a joke as @theanatolian says.

Still plenty of other circumstantial evidence to indicate that Ortiz is in his forties regardless, though.

IF this is true, it will be his best opponent to date.

It would also be his sixt volountary defence in a row.

I'm really happy for Ortiz though.

    He deserves a title shot.

I was so disappointed when Joshua picked Pulev over Ortiz.

Really hope this comes to fruition.

The irony is now, if Ortiz was to 'come clean', he would have the chance to go in the record books as the oldest world Heavyweight Champ ever if he were to win.

I don't get why he knocked back Whyte for a $4.5m check, so I reckon this is BS and he will claim it fell through and will announce fatboy Stiverne or Nicols II.
