How badly does Shavers lose? I read somewhere that Shavers said he beat "10 Holyfields" . Not in his wildest dreams. I'll put it this way...I'd back any version of Holyfield circa 1987- 1999 to beat a prime Shavers. Yes, I think that the cruiserweight version of Holyfield that beat Qawi 2 on up to the version that unified the cruiserweight division would beat a prime Shavers by a convincing UD or a late round TKO stoppage ala Bert Cooper. Shavers best case scenario against a 187- 190 lbs Holyfield would be scoring a knockdown and losing a closely contested split decision. Holyfield was just too good. I'd have to question how a prime Shavers would do vs the artifact, belongs in a museum version of Holyfield that lost to Valuev.
Shavers would lose no doubt s but Holyfield could be tagged and hurt. It would possibly be similar fight to first match Holyfield had with Stewart. Holy in and out early rounds, picking away with the jab, firing off combos, catching the slower shavers. But eventually getting dragged into a brawl. This is where holy may get rocked several times. But we know that the real deal can fight through the big punchers of history and fire back. Shavers will have tried his best but Holyfield drops him in the 11 th.
Holyfield more or less guaranteed a win here. Probably sees some shaky moments though, a la Bert Cooper fight. But no way does Shavers stop him. Too much grit, too much determination.
Even in a brawl, Holyfield would likely beat him to the punch again and again. Though I admit, Holyfield could get rattled by Shavers power and the smaller, cruiserweight version of Holyfield could taste the canvas at some point or another if he wasn't careful. The heavyweight Holyfield could get stunned more so than dropped. But no version of Holyfield (bar a couple bad performances here or there) circa 1987- 1999 is losing to even a prime time Earnie Shavers.
Shaver could hit...that's for sure...stamina problems...not really being able to carry his punch into the later rounds.. ...not winning many fights at all after the 7th round...being KO'd by Jerry Quarry in the first round back in 1973... ...I'm gonna go with Holyfield...too tough...too determined.....TKO....
The only version of holy I see possibly been stopped by shavers is the toney fight version. And even then holy gets his licks in.
Shavers was knocked out in 1 around by Jerry Quarry a fighter much slower, weaker, less skilled and possibly a lighter puncher as well. If Holyfield decided to jump on Shavers early he would probably get quick knockout just like Quarry did. Could Shavers catch Holyfield with a big punch? Sure but that would be highly unlikely considered for the most part Shavers lost to every top level guy he fought. Excluding a washed up Ken Norton and a inexperienced Jimmy Young.
Styles make fights.Holyfield likes the brawl and Shavers is arguably the hardest puncher ever. My pick is Shavers by KO
i think holyfield would be bouncing some left hooks, in series, thudding and pinpoint, on shavers right side.
Prime Holyfield was constantly bouncing, moving, adjusting. Dude was never stationary. I do see him having trouble and getting tagged too often but he's a favorite to get Shavers out of there before 12.
Shavers by KO??? To get close to KO'ing Holyfield, you had to be a big puncher AND hit him with quick combinations. And do it for many rounds. He might hit Holyfield with a big punch here or there, but he'd likely, if he's lucky have as much success as old George Foreman had. Take a beating and be around for the last bell of the last round.
Foreman never really hit Holy that flush. Holy likes to brawl against lesser fighters like Dokes or Cooper. Against Shavers, this could be a mistake.
I don't know if Dokes or Cooper were "lesser" fighters than Shavers. They all were the same level of fighter. And Foreman did hit Holyfield flush, off the top of my head I know he did in round 10. And as one poster pointed out this could be a potential blowout. Holyfield could pull a "Tyson/Spinks" on Shavers, after all, Quarry did it. IMO, the best version of Holyfield was the Holyfield of the Foreman fight. No version of Shavers would come close to stopping Holyfield that night. Shavers would be beaten up and stopped.
I meant lesser fighters than Holyfield himself. There is no question Holy is a better fighter than Shavers. But he had a tendancy to brawl and I do not see that ending well against Shavers.Holy does get hit in there and Shavers is an extremely heavy puncher
