IF IRON MIKE WAS UP AND COMING NOW,WHAT WOULD YOUR THOUGHTS BE?

Mike Tyson was heralded as the GOAT by his trainer and his fanatics, we all know how that turned out don't we. I'll say it again, Fury was known as being a good prospect at a very young age.......

My opinion is he was a good fighter that had a lot of hype behind but fell short of being a true ATG because he lost to an avergae contender and lost most of his career defining fights against the divisions best.

 

If Tyson fought today he wouldn't have the good fortune to come up under the D'amato peekaboo system which maximized his abilities and mitigated some of his weaknesses. Today he would most likely be fighting with a different style, probably not using as much head movement and crouching. Even in that case with his very high talent level, strong chin and huge punching power I still think he'd have very good success.

He'd be doing a life stretch......... his S was missing on his Speedos.

 

History has been kind enough to note that Tyson was not at his best when he lost against the Division's best. History has also been kind to note that the loss to the average contender was a bad night and a fluke unlikely to be repeated consistently. Even today people talk about Tyson without any effort on his side.

 

The Peekaboo style was natural to Tyson

Yes I agree wass, he was. I don't think on a scale of Tyson though. If Mike had gone in undefeated against wlad, as fury did, then I believe he would actually have been a slight favourite to win it. Fury was the underdog, he wasn't seen as the possible winner. I don't think fury helped himself with that running around in a batman costume!. Bit hard to take him seriously there. And maybe I'm off the mark here, but I see a young mike stopping the old wlad, it wouldn't have gone 12 I'm certain.

 

Tyrell Biggs was matched with James Tillis in his 9th pro fight or something.

The Tyson schedule was based on getting him rapid exposure and, yes, they wanted to get him a title shot.
The other thing is they wanted to keep him in the ring and the gym and off the streets.
The other motive was probably getting rich as quick as possible. Jim Jacobs died of a secret terminal disease in March 1988. It's a pretty safe guess to think he knew about this for a few years and wanted to leave a decent bank balance for his close family.

Yes, Tyson was good enough.
The Mitch Green fight was an HBO production, if I remember rightly. This was all the right exposure.
I'm sure the fact that both Tillis and Green went the distance sowed a seed of doubt and the media were quite openly writing Tyson still shouldn't be rushed.

Berbick and Thomas level fighters were a meaningful step up for Tyson, as would Holmes had been around mid 1986.

The idea that pro fighters are ready to win world titles in their pro debut or thereabouts simply isn't orthodox thinking, nevermind known fact.
I credit Tyson for rapid progress and remember well the doubts that some people had right up until Berbick.

You could say that about loads of fighters.
It's not a "major shock" every time a hot prospect who was killing people in the amateurs fails to achieve the top spot in the pros.
Even the most favoured prospects have to overcome the odds, even if they are favourites in every fight, the overall odds of success are effectively against every fighter.

 

If Tyson had been matched with Witherspoon after the Tillis fight I'm quite sure he would have been perceived as the underdog.

 

That version of Tyson would beat everyone in the division currently.

A fight against Joshua? Very much along the same lines as Tyson-Bruno I.
