Ray Robinson lost 2 years in the Army. Why does nobody talk about this?

No it's not. I really don't understand why people ignore Robinson's lost years, but they remember Ali's. I don't understand the double standard here.

That's not a double standard. Robinsons war was legit. Many didn't think that we had to go to Vietnam.

You missed the point of the thread. People assume that Ali's layoff affected his boxing. Well Robinson had a multi year layoff as well. Didn't that hurt his career as well?

In the aftermath it was viewed as unneccesary. At time the Vietnamese were seen as a very real threat to American security and Ali wanted nothing to do with protecting the country that helped make him the legend he is.

Any layoff hurts any fighter. It took Ali a while longer to get back on track. Ali gave up prime years (3 years 7 months) 67'-70'. Robinson gave up 15 months at the age of 22 or 23 I could be wrong. He didn't even hit his prime yet.

Joe Louis lost his best years due to WW2 also, and the government stole his money.

If not for WW2, who knows, Louis could have had 35 title defenses.

Titles were frozen during WW2 and that also hurt other fighters' title chances.

Everybody ignores Louis' service as well. Who knows how many defenses he could have had without WWII. But everybody only remembers Ali's layoff. But everybody saw it, Frazier "kicked his ass".

Joe Louis doesn't get enough credit for a lot of things I feel he should get. Jackie Robinson gets all the credit for breaking the color barrier in MLB, but Louis had preceded him in being HW champ after black HWs were all but barred from challenging for the HW title after Jack Johnson. Louis got America's support when he rematched Max Schmeling, whom (unfairly) represented Nazi Germany.

Robinson beat up a racist military sergaent and was court marshaled. The story goes, Louis used his "influence" (money) to get Robinson out of that mess.

Louis donated his purses to the war effort. What was the thanks he got? They charged him with fraud and stole his money.
