I think most of us can agree Ali and Tyson hold the number 1 and number 2 spots, but which boxer finishes 3rd? The guy who would get recognised by the most people anywhere in the world.

Joe Louis, I'd think. If not then maybe Frazier due to his rivalry with Ali. Then I'd guess Dempsey.

    Certainly not Floyd.

Everybody who follows boxing knows Floyd, yes.
But when I talk to casuals, almost no one knows Floyd despite he's still fighting.

But they know Tyson and Ali. I have a photo with Mike, and every person (most of them never followed boxing) recognized Mike ("wow, that's Tyson!").

Tyson and Ali are light years ahead of any current boxer in terms of popularity

#3 is either Joe Louis or Sugar Ray Robinson

I doubt if people who don't really follow boxing would know who Joe Louis or Ray Robinson are if you showed them a picture of them.

Foreman still gets my vote unless you also count Rocky Balboa.

I agree with this. And there are plenty of other boxers who are probably more well known among the general public than Joe Louis and especially Sugar Ray Robinson. Floyd Mayweather, Sugar Ray Leonard, and probably Oscar de la Hoya, Joe Frazier, Manny Pacquiao...Maybe even Jack Johnson. Buster Douglas has way more name recognition in America than Ray Robinson, probably.

    It has to be Leonard.

Then Robinson followed by Duran maybe.

I'm tempted to say Pacquiao. The Phillipines and its diaspora is well over 100 million. They all know who he is.

I'm surprised that people think that Sugar Ray Robinson is so well known among the general public. Maybe it's a generational thing?

Oh I just thought. Maybe it's Evander Holyfield?

Every boxing fan knows him, but many casuals know him, too, since Mike Tyson bit his ear in one of the most discussed and controversial sport events of all time.

A lot of bias against Mayweather here. After Ali and Tyson, I just can't see how it could be anyone else.
Mayweather has successfully managed to ride the wave of the millennial era.
Ask anyone in the world, they'll tell you they know who Floyd Mayweather is.

Over here in Germany nobody knows Floyd or Pac. Someone like Abraham, Sturm or even long retired Maske are better known then either for casuals. And everybody knows the Klitschkos of course. Schmeling and Louis are also still quite well remembered.
