I am watching the Marciano/Moore fight and wonder why do people dislike Marciano? He was a honorable man who never disgraced the sport and was very humble and yet tough. And, regardless of what you think of his opposition (I think it was at least equal to a prime Muhammad Ali opposition I mean was a 1965 Henry Cooper really better than a 1952 Jersey Joe Walcott and I think a 52 Walcott would have done better against Ali than a 64 Liston did) he still beat everyone available that mattered and that's all you can ask for. Yes, many of the guys he fought were >200 pounds, but Marciano couldn't fight guys that didn't exist. Let's say 50 years from now boxing has a super cruiserweight division which is 200 pounds to 249 pounds and a heavyweight is 250+ pounds. Would that diminish Lennox Lewis accomplishments because most of the guys he beat were under 250 pounds. Would it be correct for anyone in 50 years to say "Lennox Lewis wasn't a real heavyweight, just a super cruiserweight" or "What real heavyweight did he beat, he just beat those tiny 230 pound super cruiserweights" or "He got knocked cold by a 220 pound fighter who wouldn't even be a heavyweight today". Also, I think Marciano would be a tough fight for any smaller heavyweight (non super heavyweight sized heavyweight) that isn't a power puncher. Mike Tyson is the only "small" heavyweight that I'd give him little chance against. Marciano seemed to be very respected by his peers http://rockymarciano.net/about/quotes/ So why the dislike for Rocky Marciano? Legacywise I have him high on the totem pole because he was undefeated. As I said, you can only beat the man in front of you. And as long as he or any other champion wasn't avoiding or ducking any worthy challenger and cherry picking, then he did all that he could do. Yea it would have been good if a prime Ali was born in 1932 and was around in 1954 instead of being born in 1942 and in his prime in 1964, but it wasn't meant to be.
Marciano was great. He had talent, drive, smarts, and resolve. However he was small. By any standard and he came along during a time when his top challengers were not big men. So there is a what if, factor that is very plausible to fight fans on how the rock would fare against say someone 6'3 and 225 etc
I'm not saying that Marciano would beat any heavyweight ever and I think some of the modern super heavyweight sized heavyweights would be tough mountains for him to climb. On the other hand, I've had people say that Marciano would not have a chance against any heavyweight after 1955 and on that list of "would not have a chance against" were guys like Eddie Machen, Zora Folley, Cleveland Williams and Floyd Patterson and Jerry Quarry. Obviously, for some reason this guy had a dislike for Rocky Marciano.
Who said this? Completely indefensible. Marciano exhibited as great a fighting spirit as was captured on film. I am not sure who in these parts is disliking him.
It was a YouTube comment left on this video This content is protected It's a lot of comments, should have said I read it. But it just goes to show the blind dislike for Rocky Marciano.
As Joe Frazier said pre-FOTC, when Ali was ragging on him re: Joe's quality of opposition, Frazier said: "I can only fight the guys of my era, not of your earlier era". Same can be said about The Rock, at 49 & Zip.
Whoever made the comment that he couldn't beat any HW after 1955 is probably just a troll. I'd say most on here don't dislike Marciano. They disagree with what they consider to be hardcore fans who they think overrate his resume and h2h ability. Which is understandable can't agree on everything.
Its well known that YouTube comments are written by the worst degenerates of society... These are the same ******s who say McGregor can match Mayweather in boxing skill, flat earth is real, and our politicians are shape-shifting reptilians....
Doubting Marciano's invincibility in an era of heavies that are 50+ pounds heavier and so much longer and taller is not disliking. But denying Marciano's fighting heart and crazy athleticism is also ridiculous.
I doubt that he would be invincible against say the likes of a young Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis or Wladimir Klitchsko, but that doesn't mean he wasn't an ATG, especially when measured by what he accomplished in his time . And I see no reason to disrespect him or his legacy he left on the sport.
