It appears there is no argument that the last punch was in fact low. Whether it hit him in the nuts is not the point. It was very low and in my opinion an illegal punch.

It's in that thought that I believe the ref failed. A fight should not end due to an illegal punch. The fight should be made an NC.

Was Kovalev hurt, yes. Had Ward taken control of the fight that round, yes. But the ref should never wave off a fight after a punch that low.

Also I will say that I've watched it several time and it doesn't appear other punches would be what I would call illegal shots. They were Borderline at best.

As far as Kovalev being bent over for the last punch..it just seems to me that the trunks naturally hang even lower when bent over in that way. So in fact the capital B could have very well have been over his cup.

 

The illegal low blow was low, the video and pictures prove it. Low blows are illegal in boxing, but not for SOB. SOB beat Kessler with elbows, low blows, holding, headbutting, SOB ran across the ring and used an intentional head butt, but SOB's personal referee called the fight a TKO because of an illegal head butt, even the commentators said it was intentional. SOB should have been disqualified. SOB is a damned cheat. HBO lost their arse on SOB, serves them right.......

I am not talking about any other punches. I am specifically saying the last punch was low, period. The fight was stopped due to the last punch. It should have been a recovery period for Kovalev. I don't care who is a fan of either fighter, that was incompetence by Weeks.

 

That's my point. I think the last punch is in fact questionable, but given the fact that Kov was bent over and Wards punch was on an upward trajectory, it may have been too close to call one way or the other. That being said, the NSAC may have felt they could not over turn Weeks decision with the evidence provided. I still believe Weeks should have given a count because Kov did lean into the ropes. But, again, Ward threw 20+ unanswered punches. 20 unanswered punches when a fighter is noticeably hurt, usually prompts a stoppage anyway. So one can argue the fight could have been stopped before the questionable blow was landed.

I recall the last sequence as Ward forcing Kov to the ropes, Kov throws 2 as Ward comes in, the Ward throws 2 to the body then the fight was called. I'll have to rewatch.

 

This is factually so very wrong. Again, those in favor of the stoppage have to completely disregard the reality of the footage and write fiction.

 

More fiction from the Ward side of the argument. Kovalev never stopped throwing punches.

The problem is that despite the punch hitting the lettering they still claim it wasn't low. So pointing out that the punch is hitting the lettering will get you nowhere.

Your lats end at your butt, well below your navel line. His trunks were on his navel line where they should have been, though they occasionally slid down.

These are unusually high shorts. The entire abdominal region unfairly covered.
