Where did he say that? So good proof that Walcott's chin was improving with age......

The disrespect for Don Turner continues.

Funny how people going on about the firing the cutman incident, when Holyfield never used that as any sort of alibi. And Turner went on to steer him to great victories.

Meanwhile, Manny Steward is lauded as the person responsible for Lewis's most success (with good reason), despite saying "climatizing to the altitude doesn't matter for people like us" when turning up in South Africa with Lewis less than two weeks before Lewis was supposed to face Rahman. That was a far more foolish and arrogant move, imo.

No one would think of dismissing Steward as a "fool" point blank over one incident, but Turner gets that disrespect.

    How would you know!?
What a high and mighty clown you sound like right now.

Your supposed boxing knowledge is a gross overstatement.

    The hypocrisy.
You complain about people giving glib analyses, when you're calling a guy like Turner a fool? Are you that short sighted?

Nobody wants to hear washed up college track athletes and ex-tomato cans calling Rocky Marciano a liar, and Don Turner a fool.

It's fine to be critical of a trainer or an expert, say you disagree with them or say they might be overrated even.
But the way Turner has been dismissed and branded a fool and the like is pathetic really.
Turner has a good record in the sport, a long career, and the implication that he was a second rate corner man or some sort of idiot just doesn't stand up at all.

It's guys like Turner, who worked for years developing fighters in obscurity, staying in and around the sport with little financial reward for years, that keep boxing alive.
I don't know much else about him.

It seems weird how some supposed fans of boxing talk about trainers. There are a small handful of celebrity trainers who get made into godlike figures, and every success celebrated, and the rest of their brethren are picked apart and called up on every failing.
It's an odd thing. The extremes.

Better not clutch those pearls too hard, dear. You might break the string.

Turner is not a fool, no. I use the term jokingly and in regard to his advice to Holy. But therein lies the point... even the best and most experienced can be wrong at times. Every comment with a grain of salt.

If you tire of hearing my comments, I believe there is an ignore function.

I don't think any one of us are qualified enough to call someone at Turners level a fool. Whether it's me or you.

Crazier things have been said on this forum. I just hold you to a higher esteem.

Of course when the Marciano "backlash effect" comes into play, all bets are off.

It was in jest and in context. I have a lot of respect for Turner.

And anyone who has so little a life that they actually follow my opinions should know that I rate Marciano extremely high. In regards to his power, I am sure he punched way over his weight. As Janitor has noted, if it his his physical assets, if it isn't his skill, it's got to be something. And a large part of that something was his power.

Now, if you want to tell me he punched harder than Lewis or Waldo, then I start to have an issue. But anymore, after 12 years on this board, I really don't care.

Nobody called Ray Arcel a fool when he said Jack Dempsey "would have a picnic" with modern fighters.

So I don't understand why Don Turner should be attacked for saying Marciano was so great.

These guys are the last link to another time. They lived it and were around long enough to train fighters from both times and make comparisons. Their opinions are not based on what a fighter could do on film but what they could do in a gym. what the overall level was in all the top gyms at a specific time and how good a fighter had to be to stand out.

Too many people want to wright off a guy that says something they don't like. Even guys with a body of work, a legacy and a lifetime in the sport. With trainers like Arcel and Don Turner these guys were not just tv fans.

Actually, Arcel said some foolish things. I started a list once. I should revisit it. Good times.

    Party.
