Michael Spinks asked how he'd beat Bob Foster

I'd lean towards Michael Spinks to win this one. Both had great power but Spinks IMO was the better boxer.

 

How do you think a match between Foster and Spinks' nemesis, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, would have played out?

On one hand Foster ran through everyone at 175, but on the other, Eddie's durability, mobility, and deceiving combination of hand speed and power would make for a fascinating clash.

I was rematching some tape of Foster just recently, and I was surprised and impressed by Foster's ring generalship on offense. Everyone focuses on his breathtaking power, but his cunning in setting up that power was something I had always previously overlooked.

 

Always loved Michael. Great fighter. He certainly had the skills and punch to beat anyone at lt Hwt. I still think the left uppercut he threw to beat Johnson was one of the best shots if not the best I've ever seen. Perfect thrown and devastatingly powerful.

 

I'm from Albuquerque, I knew Bob Foster and talked boxing with hom on a few occasions, but Spinks was better.

 

What a gentleman..Like him even more after that.

 

I read that he became a cop after he retired from boxing and he retired as a police sergeant from the force.

I think it would be close. Years ago the consensus favored Foster. I've always thought it extremely close. Spinks and Foster would be two of the top 5 or so punchers ever at this weight i reckon. Both had murderous one punch knockout power in either hand. Spinks beat the better fighters.

I wonder what strategy Eddie Futch would put in place for this one?

Fosters jab would make it extremely awkward for Spinks and Foster's power makes it very hard to take too many risks.

I'm thinking Spinks might have to stop him to win. Foster never had any problems durability wise at 175.

 

SPINKS!!! Humble, polite and yet always giddy. Helluva guy.

 

The same could be said for Spinks durability at LHW. Spinks seemed to have the better movement and quickness. Spinks seemed like a Walcott type mover

Although at heavyweight, I'd in a minute pick Spinks to beat him. Some of the guys Foster lost to a heavyweight like Doug Jones and Ernie Terrell I think Spinks would have beaten.

 

Foster's as dangerous as it gets at 175, but I'm a massive fan of Spinks there. I'd give him at least a solid chance to beat any 175 pounder ever.

I think it's a 50/50 fight.

They're the two best LHWs I've seen on film. All the footage I've seen of Charles is at HW and of Moore is when he was 40

 

Saw him live May 24,1969 in West Springfield Mass. when he KO'd Andy Kendall to retain his Lt. Heavy title...Foster was as good as it gets at 175 lbs.....

 

The main technical flaw of Foster was dropping that jab. His jab was so good however no opponent at light hwt could capitalize. Spinks best punch is his right hand. Typically at a high level technical flaws are observed and a fight plan derived to attack those flaws. At some point Spinks finds Fostrrs jaw with a counter right and the fight is over. In an even bout Spinks stops Foster in round 9.
