These guys made a living training kids. Then training champions. A full time job with boxers depending on them. Boxers listening to them,valuing their words and benefiting from their training. Great fighters too. For generations.

It's a bit different than TV fans watching old film and comparing fighters on new film.

 

Obviously, I think he went far beyond "giving respect where respect is due." Even the most knowledgable and experienced boxing folks have biases and emotions that can distort their views and perceptions. Your glib retort was lazy and all too predictable. But I get it-- to a raving fanboy like you, no praise for an old-school "ATG" heavyweight could ever be excessive or too grandiose to take at face value, and nobody who agrees with you is ever biased or compromised by sentimental nostalgia.

 

I believe I read that 13 of Rocky's 49 opponents never fought again, and many went to the hospital.

 

You saying Rocky fought a lot of old past their prime fighters that were ready for retirement?

 

Not sure that many of the opponents who never fought again ever had a prime.

 

I think only Moore showed any success after facing Rocky .Don C*ckell said he had been hit harder ,but never so often!

I know because I have read interviews with Marciano and two biographies on him. I know that Marciano butted Walcott in the 6th rd which caused a cut on Walcott ,and simultaneously one on Marciano, in his hair line.Marciano tried to target Walcott's cut but was bothered by the blood flowing down from his own cut.
In his corner before the 7th rd started Rocky complained of a burning sensation in his eyes, a sponge of water was put over his head.
Between the 7th and 8th rds Rocky again complained about his eyes burning,cut man Freddy Brown placed two small sponges of water on his eyes,while this was going on Al Weill was going into hysterics accusing Walcott's corner of foul play and shouting at the referee Charley Daggert, the Commissioner Ox Da Grossa ordered Weill out of the corner. Impartial observers such as Sam Silverman, sitting just below Rockys corner said it was his own corner that caused the problem as the liniment they put on his forehead dripped down into his eyes.At no time was Rocky blind in there though he was undoubtedly in some pain. Years later Marciano accused Felix Bocchicchio, Walcott's manager of putting capsicum of pepper on Walcott's shoulders.
I'm am no boxing expert ,and just an average poster but I do seem to be better informed on this particular subject than yourself!

Information that you were totally ignorant of.If I am deficient in boxing knowledge what does that make you?

 

Arcel was a great trainer but there are others that don't get the recognition they deserve.

Bill Gore,Jackie McCoy,Whitey Bimstein.

 

I would never believe something because Ray Arcel or whoever said it was so, and neither would I advise anybody else to do.

What I would also not do, is dismiss that opinion out of hand, because I did not like what they were saying.

I would ask what led that person to form that opinion.
